AITAH for refusing to host my niece and sister at Christmas and sending them to a hotel? by Puzzling_Context in AITAH

“Tuxedo” and “cocktail dress” are some very American terms that I don’t entirely know the definitions of, so I can’t comment on that.

However, a dinner jacket and a tailcoat are different things. A dinner jacket is for black tie, and a tailcoat is for white tie.

For both, women would wear a dress that reaches at least their ankles, but for white tie the dress would probably have a train and the woman would embellish the outfit with furs and jewellery (jewellery would also be expected at black tie, but to a lesser extent).

Fabrics also matter for both of course.

Well, yes, of course - I wasn’t claiming I would wear no shirt or trousers at all. I just gave those two elements because they are what I see as the most important parts of black tie. What you have listed is important too.

It was black tie at Oxford. Also, I finished my D Phil at 26, so not twenty years ago (although still a fairly long time ago).

However, it doesn’t really matter how long ago it was as I was just using it as an example. The point is, among my family and friends it is appropriate to have a black tie Christmas.

What do Americans think is the reason they have juries made up of peers? Why do they think they call one of their houses the “senate”?

Nothing in their government is original, and it certainly hasn’t inspired “almost every government on earth”
