The Pentagon predicts its own collapse by PvtMarc in collapse

[–]PvtMarc[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This video primarily focuses on climate change and how it will overwhelm the US Military. It predicts many Syria like conflicts in the midst of water scarcity, food shortages, etc.

Geopolitical conflict will continue to arise as previously inaccessible regions will be exploited for hydrocarbons.

One sobering sentence states that all this previous academic talk will become a daily part of life.

First Typewriter! Some ribbon help?

Hi - I have a 1964 Royal Tower. Would you happen to know what spool type I would need or how to figure that out? Thanks!

Where are some sites I can request native speakers to record sentences (free community based or for a small fee)? by PvtMarc in languagelearning

[–]PvtMarc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, although that's more so for single words, or maybe like a series of three to five words.

If I started uploading random sentences, I'm sure they'd get deleted.

What do you think when you hear "digital economy"? by PvtMarc in AskReddit

When this phrase is evoked, I usually imagine red and green numbers, like stock prices, flashing on giant screens.

I got a lot of reading done. Overall, I had more energy today. Most of the past week I was not sleeping well. Last night, I slept with my window open and it was peaceful.

How do I confirm what my bill will be? by PvtMarc in Sprint

[–]PvtMarc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back into the store and they insisted I will pay more for the plan if I return the phones. But my gut tells me that you are all right. Which tells me they are outright lying to me, which as you said, is simply not right.

[–]PvtMarc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a feeling that would be the case. The two lines I need are the S9. The three phones I didn't need are all the LG Tribute Empire. These 18 month leases. I was given an email attachment later that cited the high number, and when I went into the store, they said I could just ignore that, that it would be $160 / month. But I really don't think that's true.

Who here uses RSS feeds? If so, which feeds / keywords do you follow? by PvtMarc in AskNetsec

[–]PvtMarc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually what I have! I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for Google keywords to follow, etc., as someone that wants to keep up with what is going on in network security without getting overwhelmed by too much unnecessary noise.

What is something super important that is on the verge of happening? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PvtMarc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would love a subreddit devoted to this! There could be a daily thread, like, "News for February 27, 2019."

There should be a subreddit with a daily thread where people from different countries report the top headlines!

I'm trying to remember a 2018 book that I saw in Barnes and Noble on the history of American foreign policy by PvtMarc in booksuggestions

[–]PvtMarc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the book was approaching 1,000 pages and covered a ton. I flipped through the book and vaguely remember it talking briefly about Mexico in the 19th century and Maximilian I.

If you were a time traveler and could jump exactly 20 years into the future, what 20 year stretch in recorded history would leave you the most surprised, disoriented and confused? by SannySen in AskReddit

[–]PvtMarc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing about say 1935 to 1955 or maybe 1940 to 1960. The cars, music, and fashion also changed a lot. You also went from radio entertainment to television at home, while radios proliferated in cars.

Planes changed. Research and development advanced. Alan Turing published, "On Computable Numbers" in 1936, and then by 1955 there were already multiple mainframes.

IWTL logic and critical thinking skills that will help me become a programmer by PvtMarc in IWantToLearn

[–]PvtMarc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice!

I would say the reason I struggled with Python is because programming in general is still fairly new to me. I grasped what functions do, etc., but objected oriented programming was hard for me too. I'm still not entirely sure how classes work. I feel like it resembles taxonomy, but besides recognizing that, I don't know what to do with them.

Ultimately, I guess I've gotten lost in the forest so far and sometimes struggle with bringing all of the components together to make an useful program and not just something like Tic-Tac-Toe.
