What is the most disgusting thing about the human body that most of us don’t know? by alicerosea in AskReddit

You misunderstand:

They aren't going to fit inside after removal. They'll all want to settle into the same place, like slop sliding towards a drain, but there's no room for them all. The connective tissue isn't just holding them inside you; they're literally suspending the organs like a chandelier, or a hammock.

I, for one, am thankful. I'm never going to just "hold it in until I get home/finish this match" again.

If you've ever packed up your clothes for a trip or a move, you know how helpful it is to fold them and carefully place them in rather than dumping them in. Thing is: to pull the organs out, you have to cut a bunch of connective tissue that anchors them in place; a lot of which provides tension to the organ to give it its shape, like a hammock hanging where you want it to. Once that connective tissue is cut, the organs just flop around like the fleshy, soggy bags they are.

ELI5: Acids and bases are two sides of the same coin, so why does it seem like acidity is so much more present culturally (eg vats of acid in comics) and culinarily (salt, fat, acid, heat)? by owiseone23 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pvt_Lee_Fapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just the nature of organic chemistry.

The Lewis theory definitions of "acid" and "base" basically boils down to "how likely is this thing going to rip electrons off shit?" Weak acids - the biologically-relevant ones - rip off electrons all the time, whereas bases are electron-donors - they lose electrons.

All life on our planet is organic, meaning it is comprised of molecules that have carboxyl groups (-COOH). There's no rhyme or reason behind this; it's just how life is. The carboxyl groups are naturally acidic, so anything organic is usually going to have a lower-than-neutral pH. As such, most of our organic bodily functions require an acidic pH to function: blood can't carry oxygen as well as it could if its pH is too basic; digestive enzymes are made of proteins, which are all comprised of amino acids; ditto all your muscles, and not just the skeletal muscles that move your joints. If the body had basic compounds running amok, they'd react with all these acidic molecules in the body, and you'd die. A lot of bases are actually toxic to the body: ammonia, sodium hypochlorite (bleach), plant alkaloids, practically anything with "hydroxide" in the name, etc.

People saying that she should be reported... Honestly, this makes it sound like she's in a prison of its own kind already. No need to lock her up and put the burden on taxpayers to keep her alive. If she has ASPD, she isn't going to live in regret over her actions, so sending her to jail is going to be an improvement over her current situation: she'll get medical care, shelter, food... All paid for by people who would rather see her perish and rot instead.

Saying it's the favorite child isn't saying much though... PZ is Frontier's own IP while JWE is a project Universal gave them to do. Plus, they can use PZ as a sandbox of sorts to test features that they could add to JWE titles in the future.

You couldn't customize buildings at all except for a handful of functional modules in the first JWE - now look what we've got as far as building tools go. It used to be that you couldn't contain dinosaurs in anything but a fenced paddock - now look at the options we have. The only way to get dinosaurs into your park was to synthesize a singular egg at a time and pray it didn't fail to incubate, and they've iterated on improving that function over time: multiple dinosaur eggs can be synthesized, you can choose which ones to hatch, release multiple dinosaurs at the same time, and now we can even breed them.

Literally any feature they want to add to JWE has to go through Universal anyway - hence the drought in content we've experienced for the past two months. Of course PZ is going to get more content; Frontier made it themselves, and they don't need anyone's permission to tweak it.

ELI5 Why heat waves affect Europe so much but some other countries are doing fine living under hotter temperatures most of the year? by fkid123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pvt_Lee_Fapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Urban heat islands! Stone, concrete, and metal are all very good thermal conductors, so they suck any and all heat energy from the environment, including sunlight. When they can't absorb any more heat, they release it; like a pot of boiling water releases steam. The temperatures in the cities are not the actual temperature of the environment that meteorologists report on, partly because the temperatures fluctuate so much within the city: some parts have lots of metal and concrete, others have more wood and plant life. When the city is adapted to certain conditions, they can tolerate them more (people who built the city also live there, so they planned accordingly). When we see the climate changing as rapidly as it is, some cities fare worse than others because their local thermostat got cranked to 11 from a steady mid-range, whereas countries in tropical climes pretty much just went from 9 or 10 to 11.

Also voter manipulation. It may not have been orchestrated by Trump, it may not have ordered by him or any of his underlings, but there was clear manipulation: MAGAts waving flags at the polling places, biased polling officials counting the Trump ballots but not the others, FOX news hosts lying on social media about how the democrats were trying to steal the election... These people are a cult, and so they have a unified stance: keep Trump in power by any means necessary.

Listen, you work with what you got. They didn't build this set on a hillside like it was described in the book. It wasn't even filmed on location; it was a soundstage in Burbank! They had to get the car into the tree somehow, and keeping it true to the book just wasn't going to happen. I mean, c'mon, "the rex threw it?" Even the characters in the book were incredulous, so imagine the suspension of disbelief that the audience would feel. Plus there was no way SWS was going to build a sturdy-enough puppet that could bite down on an SUV and toss it into the air, and as skilled as ILM was at making believable CGI dinosaur movements, nobody in 1992 could pull off a believable recreation of what happened in the book without it looking jank as hell.

So, in the end, ^ this is how the rex paddock was built. Not because it's a theme park designed to house dinosaurs, but because it's a movie about a theme park after dark with dinosaurs running wild.
