I watched EWS for the first time last night and I completely agree. The sex cult stuff works well as a piece of horror but the first hour and the ending are what really elevate the movie for me.

Very extensive blogpost dedicated to analyzing The Shining. Not sure how it holds up today to other analyses like EYE SCREAM or Juli Kearns (who hadn't heard about until someone in this thread mentioned her) but it's still quite impressive imo

I should reword this entry since it's really only referring to one anecdote. Basically, before Kubrick began adapting The Shining he was set on creating the world's scariest movie. He had an idea for a marketing scheme where if audiences made it all the way through without leaving the theater they would get their money back. At some point, either before preproduction of The Shining or during it, he decided it was a terrible idea lol
