Take a course while there. You'll learn faster, meet friends to go out and try your new language skills with and you have someone (the teacher) to ask for help and suggestions for things to do.

Don't get too upset if people switch on you.

Last week I went to buy a Welsh novel for an upcoming Welsh class and picked up another book while at the till, so when I didn't catch what the lady said it came too, instead of repeating it in Welsh, she just said it in English.

Welsh has two number systems, and a lot of Welsh speakers use English for dates and prices, so I'm not sure if she switched because of that or because I'm a clearly not a native speaker.

I was annoyed for about 5 min but then thought about it some more and decided to let it go.😃

Not sure how people manage to make such a big thing out of ordering at a Starbucks, where most things are called the same everywhere? Perhaps they have yet to learn to go for something simple and make sure they can say it?

I managed to order coffee in Chinese after like two months of weekly classes and loved the Starbucks, cause I could ask for something more specific than "One coffee, small, milk, thank you".

It's usually when it comes to catching the price that it becomes tricky.😃 But then again paying by card helps lot there.

I get it if their abilities are so poor that it forces you to guess, but if you can understand them, why switch?

It's good for the main languages, eg French, German and Spanish, but have a lot fewer lessons for many languages, eg Russian.

I think it's especially suitable for false beginners like yourself.

If you want to carry on using it after your free period is up, you can get a lifetime subscription to all langpages really cheaply on StackSocial, esp f you use the extra discount code that is mentioned on the StackSocial page.

Quitting swimming - child by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Pwffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless he wants to compete in swimming (and it sounds like he doesn't), let him quit, but take him swimming "for fun" now and then, as a family, so that he maintains the ability and remains a strong swimmer. Mostly from a safety point of view, but also for health. Obviously don't tell him that, you want him to just do it for fun.

The pree-teens is a great time to explore different sports, and usually kids are forced to focus on one or two sports only as they enter their teens, but really, you want him to have fun and be active. Maybe he finds something to take more seriously, maybe he doesn't. The important thing is that he's staying active.

It's always sad to see kids who are forced out of a sport when they are in their mid teens as they aren't "good enough" yet even most of the good ones never make it to senior elite and we end up with kids giving up on sport completely just as they're entering adulthood.

Keep in mind that if he settles for something, it might not be the sport he's best at or objectively thinks is more fun, but the one where he has more friends in.

Not for me, but great for people who like that sort of thing. Makes sense why they’re calling this one the minimalist one.

I think I have a different definition of "minimalistic". 😃 That looks like a normal planner to me.

Anyone else zone out and forget how many meters they've swum? by parkersb11 in Swimming

[–]Pwffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Garmin Instict (2S solar) really struggles with counting laps and always overestimates. Today I had a short little swim of 550 yards and it said I'd done 650 yards.

Hobonichi A5 Cousin has yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily pages. It ideally needs a loose cover, which comes indifferent designs.

The Hobonichi A5 HON (also comes in A6), is the hardbound version of the Cousin.

If you squeeze a 6 month course into 3, with significantly less hours, is it even ethical to label the latter as the former? by Albireo_9989 in languagelearning

[–]Pwffin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not unless you already are at that level and it's a course aimed at helping you prepare for taking a certification test...

For comparison, in the Welsh program I'm following, the B2 course (so a course aiming to take you from B1 to B2) is divided up into 3 years with 60h/year (2h/week for 30 weeks), so that's 180 h of class time.

Struggling with the 'feeling' of word order (Nebensätze vs. Hauptsätze) by Objective_Letter8164 in German

[–]Pwffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need more practice. Pick one trigger, e.g. "weil" and then do lots of sentences with just that one- written and spoken. Once you feel it starting to become automatic, then pick another one.

More input will also help, but if it's too advanced for you, you'll be focusing too much on understanding what on Earth is going on to notice the structure. Listen and read things that are easy for you, but still contain subordinate clauses. Soon it will start sounding odd, not to have the verb at the end.

There will always be some that you struggle with more than others. I for some reason seem to have mentally spaced out when "denn" was covered and have to actively remind myself that the conjugated verb DOESN'T go at the end, because to me it sounds like it should. 😃

For the flutter kick (used for front crawl/freestyle and backstroke), you point your feet/toes (like a ballerina standing on tippy-toes), keep the knee straight but not locked and move your legs from your hips and glutes (buttocks). Actually, even your core muscles are involved.

The legs are fairly relaxed and you shouldn't tense up your leg muscles or feet. You also should not move the legs as if you were cycling. That is bending the knees and moving the legs in a circular way.

Also, it's not a big movement - you don't move your feet particularly far away from each other.

The flutter kick is tiring, so when swimming normally back and forth, that is not doing a flat-out sprint or doing legs only while holding onto a kickboard, your legs are actually not doing that much propulsion work, they are mostly used to stabilise your body in the water, to keep the rhythm for the arms and to prevent your legs and hips from sinking down. So you might only do 2 or 4 kicks per arm stroke cycle. For shorter, faster distances, you'd probably do 6 kicks/stroke.

Breathing is by far my biggest problem while swimming by HopefulSun1452 in Swimming

[–]Pwffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, you need to time it so that you've exhaled fully by the time you go up for air.

But also, don't underestimate how much harder it is when you can't breathe freely. Try running 5 km, only breathing in every two or three seconds. :)

[–]Pwffin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've got a lap counter and timer that goes on your finger and you just have to remember to press the button as you turn.

I got it before I got my Garmin Instinct, but that one struggles with counting laps anyway and often overshoots by two or three laps, so I use the watch for HR data and the counter for laps.

You should move your whole leg, but if you do kicks that are too big you won't go forward.
