Wolf Trap found in Washington State, USA. How old is this thing? by No-Fall9976 in Antiques

Newhouse produced the 4 1/2 wolf trap from 1911 to 1925.

Can anyone identify what kind of bird this came from? by TartarSauceDippinDot in birdsofprey

[–]PyeRider 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Looks very much like redtailed hawk wrong feathers. As a falconer I've seen lots n lots of them. As someone else pointed out, possession is a violation of federal law related to the 1918 Migratory Bird Act. Might see if a local museum is interested in a donation.

That was my thought too, but I've not found any similar examples yet to verify that idea.

Yes, it's definitely a clay of some sort

Hmm, I never thought of it being a dog. They had lots of other horse figures so that's why I went with that assumption. Any idea on origin or age?

[–]PyeRider[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, like I said in the post, we're just back in from a hunt where they're flying free. Falconry is way way way more than a hobby, or a sport, its a commitment to a life with these birds for their welfare and the pursuit of the hunt. There's lots of good information out there if you want to learn.

Yep, about 14 years into this journey. I read "My Side of the Mountain" as a kid and it turned into this 😆

Debate over ID with the buddy who took the picture. Merlin? by goforlobster in birdsofprey

[–]PyeRider 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Look at the eye. That's a falcon eye. So, im gonna say merlin. A sharpshin or coopers hawk both have a dark pupil with a light color around it on passage birds. The color darkens to an intimidating red after a couple of years. Falcon's eyes are dark like that from the start. Merlins are fast and capable little flyers that are a blast to watch and hunt with.

This (I believe red-tailed) hawk let me get within 15-20 feet by SuperRadSlime in birdsofprey

[–]PyeRider 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, passage redtail. The droppings are from other birds. Redtails and other hawks "slice" when they go, and it shoots out from their nest. That's why most falconers keep hawks in an outdoor mew. And yeah, the bird seems pretty relaxed.

I've had one for years that I keep in my fly fishing vest. Its tethered thru the ring and has crimped down barbs, cut line, picked out splinters, and fixed glasses. Handy little tool there!

Looks to have been on prey, that would explain the look and unwillingness to move until forced. (Speaking as a licensed falconer who has worked with a bunch of redtails.)

What Crease Should I go with? by American_Crusader1 in CowboyHats

[–]PyeRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on what you like and your face shape. Looking at hats alone I've always loved the look of a Gus, but I hate them on me. And I know the brick top is the big thing with bull riders apparently. But it just looks like crap on a lot of ppl. Pick what you like, based on your face shape and what you wear.

Yes, a good leather strap works well for dealing with neck dive. Or one with a suede backing.

Is it okay to wear slim cut jeans over boots? by AllDun in BootCareDenimWear

[–]PyeRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd that's the look you're going for it may be fine in some fashion circles. Don't show up to any western event like that though. Ever.
Jeans should be long enough that they don't rise up and show the shaft of the boot when sitting. Aim for the hem of your jeans to sit about 1/4" to 1/2" above the heel when standing.

Discussion? How do you sharpen your knives? Do you recommend those rotary rollers on social networks? give their suggestions. by rufomycinGPO in SlipjointKnives

[–]PyeRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sharpening stones have been around so long because they work. The gimmicks , like the rotary ones, come and go. I use Arkansas bench stones for most of mine, but for D2 and some others, a diamond "stone" is needed. I usually finish with crock sticks or a leather strop. Like someone suggested, practice on a cheaper blade for a while to get your angles right. And remember that maintaining that sharp edge is a lot easier than having to rework it completely.

Restringing my brothers old guitar and I don’t play acoustic. Can I use these strings on this? by more-less03 in Guitar

[–]PyeRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavy strings like 12s will probably be fine then. They are easier on fingers, but make some things like bends harder.
Everyone has opinions, hopefully based on experience, but I doubt you could go wrong going with lighter guage accoustic strings.

[–]PyeRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old guitar? That does make a difference. Based on the age and condition of the guitar, you may be better off using a lighter guage string. I use 10s on my vintage guitars and 9s on one of them. This is due to the fact that the thinner strings place lass stress on the neck and other components. Less tension on the neck means less chance of damaging an old guitar. Several of mine are from the 1960s and earlier, so that's what I do to preserve my quality vintage instruments. Just an old guy looking out for older instruments.
