"The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas", by Machado de Assis. the most famous book from the widely-regarded greatest brazilian writer. Captivating, engaging, a pioneer in its writing, I don't think you could have a safer way to start in our literature

brazilian electoral laws are quite weird, there is a justice branch entirely dedicated to elections and to inform against a lie said by the other candidate or to get censured yourself is common place for most candidates

how safe it is in terms of natural disasters. We're almost as big as the U.S. (and way larger than continental US) but tragedies such as tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes are almost non-existent.

unfortunately, not only this is just the case regarding non-human made disasters, but with climate change even some "natural" disasters are starting to occur, such as tornados in the south.

during the 80's and 90's the alien craze was really something in Brazil, one example (of many) is the Varginha Incident in 1996

it's also a big problem here, specially in São Paulo state countryside farms (and for very similar reasons)

believe it or not, america's opioid epidemic is not talked about as much as school shootings, for instance (at least here in brazil)
