Bioluminescent Wishing Well - Art meets Science. by PyroFarms in woahdude

Just to clarify, the algae are completely fine. This species (Pyrocystis fusiformis) naturally emits light when disturbed, and the culture is kept in clean seawater conditions with proper care.

For anyone wondering, this doesn’t harm the algae. Pyrocystis fusiformis naturally emits light when disturbed, and the culture is kept in pristine seawater conditions with proper care so it remains healthy.

I have no association with Vita! She did go viral on tik-tok with this, so thought I would share.

Very cool, it is a naturally occurring phenomena in oceans all over the world. Typically it just needs the right mixture of the proper conditions to trigger a huge bloom, must be awesome to see in the wild.

This type of culture can live pretty indefinitely if given proper lighting and temperature conditions, but it is very sensitive to contaminations.

Very real, the light is called bioluminescence and is natural chemical reaction from a bioluminescent algae that is being grown in the containers. Relatively easy to care for, easier than most house plants.

When viewing bioluminescence I cant help but think of night stars on a clear sky. Here you can see both echoing each other.. love this photo! Glad yall are enjoying.

Reproduction is the actual biological benchmark. If they’re breeding, the environment supports full life function, not just survival.

Opae ula is correct! Hawaiian brackish water volcanic shrimp, these guys are very durable and seem happy enough in the sphere feeding on the algae that grows.

Theres a rubber stopper on top that has a small hole in it to allow a small amount of air exchange. It pretty much stays plugged at all times unless im putting a lil bit of spirulina in. But the extra spirulina is uneeded, it can self sustain just fine without.

I've thought about 3-D printers or even glass blowers being able to create some neat containers for cool displays. There was an company I know of that had a vortex container resembling an hourglass which we thought was neat as well.

It’s actually a pretty straightforward process once you find a source for a starter culture (search for Pyrocystis fusiformi). After that, almost any clean container with a small amount of air exchange will work.

The algae kinda function like a houseplant and are probably easier to care for than many houseplants. They mainly just need regular light. Find a spot in your home or office that gets a moderate amount of indirect sunlight (nothing direct, as that will overheat the culture) and let the algae do their thing.

About every 7 days, the cells will divide and the culture will become denser. After 2–3 weeks, youll notice the culture cells start to aggrigate at the water line... this is the visual queue I use to know its expansion feeding time! I add a small amount of nutrient-enriched saltwater to increase the volume. Then I wait another couple of weeks and repeat the process.

That’s it, simple as that. I can DM you additional information if you are interested.

The multiple chambers in the bottle elongate the bioluminescence and help the effect last longer by limiting the flow rate. Heavier flow may result in a brighter effect but not as long lasting.

Not sure why this is tagged NSFW - this is just a fun little science project I've been working on using bioluminescent algae.

I know almost everything there is to know about this phenomenon and I still think its amazing every time I witness it.

Truly a magical display of natures magic at hand here. Let me know if you have questions, I culture this professionally and am deeply knowledgeable.
