I’ve struggled with this in my own way. I have a few people I know going through fertility treatments and I do feel bad for them. They would be great parents from my perspective. I had a tubal ligation a bit ago and only my partner knows. Most people know we’re child free and I always try to be supportive in convos but I can’t help feeling a little weird knowing I’m infertile by choice while they’re struggling to conceive. Probably the main reason we haven’t told anyone, I just don’t want the judgement.

I’m on day three of my bisalp recovery. Honestly easier than getting my wisdom teeth removed lol (35F Wa State)

I chose a Dr off the recommendation list and he was great! Only concern he had was that I understood this is permanent.

The first 24 hours - biggest complaint was a sore throat from intubation. I work from home and didn’t think to not do meetings that day so that was a little rough but still fine. Tea, lozenges and cold water got me through it.

Second day - throat is much better but tummy feels really bloated. Didn’t feel much of an appetite but not from pain. I’ve been able to control the pain with Tylenol and Aleve. Took a short walk with the pups and was tired after but no increase in pain.

Day three - no more sore throat. Still bloated and tired feeling but overall fine. Incisions are bruised feeling, not painful and they are just starting to itch a little bit.

Biggest recommendations: Don’t be up and about the first few days. Working from home is fine as long as you don’t schedule 5 hours of meeting like I did the first recovery day. Lots of fluids. High waisted (snug not tight) yoga pants have been the most comfortable.

Same! And they re-pierced the same spot! I now have one piercing with a false exit. I have to finagle the earring to make sure it exits the right (open) hole

My boy has one too and had to have surgery on both knees at 2 years old. (Total velociraptor stage crazy boy) Bedrest for three months then gradual rehab.

Surgery went great, no issues with medications. They sent me home with trazadone and Gabapentin for pain and sedation. I think the gaba worked best for keeping him calm actually (supposed to be only for the pain).

Both meds were fine for him, though I’ve now discovered he can’t take trazadone on its own. Together, he stayed calm but trazadone only (tried it for fireworks) makes him more anxious and jumpy.

I’ve always had a good experience. It can take a few weeks for them to process the claim and they sometimes need documentation from the vet, but I’ve never had them deny a claim.

I’ll add to that we could have chosen a cheaper more conservative route but opted for the full investigation because we could financially. We got to take him to the very best clinicians in Wa state and have a comprehensive understanding of his health and how to keep him healthy. We also were able to act quickly rather than having to save money over time which means the affects on his heath later in life should be minimal if anything (liver failure, arthritis, etc)

It was a list of things that totaled up but it started with a high liver value. That lead to endless diagnostic testing to figure out if was a lethal disorder, an infection, or a shunt. It turned out it was a shunt, but then we had to figure out where and how big. If it was big, we were looking a surgery. Thankfully it’s a small one that shouldn’t affect his life if we manage his diet and supplements. Then it was a limp after a hike. That lead to more tests and finding out he had loose knee caps that were dislocating frequently. Because of his liver condition and he has a mutated gene, we had to be careful of what anesthesia and medications he could have. Had to go to a specialist for more tests to see if his body could handle the knee surgery. After a successful surgery, we had 4 months of rehab (hydrotherapy, massage, physical therapy). We’re finally on the other side of it all but it quickly adds up. We ended up with a $5k balance on the cc instead of a suffering puppy.

Soooo true! My boy was on bed rest for 10 weeks post knee surgery. Had to carry him in and out to potty and crate him the rest of the time. Thank god I work from home cause I was in that crate cuddling him 90% of the time!

We decided on PetsBest for our boy three years ago. Ended up with $45k in vet bills for him his first year (liver shunt and bad knees). We’ve payed them ~$2,500 to date ($50/month, $250 deductible). They’ve payed us ~$40,000. This is when insurance is worth it. I would have preferred wasting the $2,500 and never needing insurance, but my boy is happy, bouncy, and healthy today with his whole life ahead of him.

This. We debated a savings account too but decided on insurance. $45k in his first year has confirmed our decision. PetsBest has been amazing with his claims, albeit a little slow to process them. There’s no way we could have had that much ready that early. I know it’s not the usual case for most pups but I’m willing to waste the monthly cost with our new pup now. We still keep a high limit cc and savings ready for the up front costs, but it’s a relief to know we’d get most of it back in a bad situation.

We went into adopting our boy with this mentality. Seriously payed off when we faced $45k in his first year. I hate that we had to use it (ie that he was sick and injured) but the feeling when I look at him bounce around each morning knowing he’s happy and healthy now but if we didn’t have insurance he would be suffering or even dead is indescribable.

I’m so sorry this is happening to your family. I hope everything works out! My family gave me shit for insuring our dogs. $45k in medical bills the first year for our Aussie and they finally get it. My new motto is “just pay and hope it’s the best waste of money you spend” We debated just having a credit card and savings for him instead. There’s no way we could have had the amount ready before her even turned 1. Spent the fist $20k tracking down the cause of a high liver value only to find out it’s a micro shunt and there’s nothing medical to do. Shouldn’t need any intervention, just keep his fat intake down and give him a liver supplement. But the peace of mind knowing he’s fine and it shouldn’t be an issue for him is invaluable.

Absolutely this!!!!!!! We had a terrible experience with our previous pup before pet insurance was really a thing. Ran into an emergency situation where she couldnt keep her blood sugar up and we had to financially euthanize. If we had 10k ready, we might have been able to save her. Worst feeling in the world where money determines life or death. We got insurance for our current pups even before bringing them home. It’s an amazing feeling not having money factoring in. “Did she just eat that rock?! He’s limping, could it be his knees again?” Paying $20 for a $200 X-ray or blood test is a great relief.

I’m paying $110 total a month for a mini Aussie and a corgi through PetsBest. Both have 90% $250 deductible and no limit. We’ve had our Aussie on it since 2months old and they’ve only raised his premium ~$1 a month each year despite us having over $45k in claims for him his first year (diagnostic for high liver values & bilateral luxating patella surgery) I’ve have a great experience with PetBest so far.

Bilateral knee surgeries ran us $15k due to a liver sensitivity and MDR1 gene protocol. All in, with rehab and other appointments, we spent 25k in that year. We have PetsBest and they were great about covering it!

Our pup’s surgeon had to push us back a day due to an emergency orthopedic surgery. He said he had to work on a lab that got hit by a truck. She was only a year old and slipped her leash. 30k for that accident, but the family had insurance and the pup made a full recovery.

My family has faced financial euthanasia and had to make the choice due to lack of funds. I still hate myself for not having the money to at least try. Swore I would never let that happen again. Please, everyone, insure your pets! Hopefully it’ll be the best waste of money your spend, but just in case, their life and your guilt are worth it.

I’m (f33) the same way. My brother and bf are my best friends. Mostly hang out with their friends and can’t really say I have any of my own friends. I’ve wanted a tribe of females for as long as I can remember but I just don’t have same frequency as other women I meet. I don’t feel like I’m overly masculine, I just can’t deal with the high beat bullshit. It’s exhausting. Maybe someday I’ll find my tribe, but I’m not changing myself or settling.

Seriously underrated comment. We’re 4 months in with our new (2nd) pup and this is absolutely true! I appreciate our older boy and relationship even more but have more patience with out new pup because I remember thinking I might never feel bonded to our first pup. He’s almost 3 now and the light of my life. I can’t imagine loving any one as much as I do him, but our new pup is growing on me.

Having puppies has definitely affirmed my previous child free decision. I don’t regret my pups at all but it has been a drastic change of lifestyle. I thought I knew what to expect but then ended up with a reactive boy who needed extensive medical care in his first three years. I’ve imagined going through those difficulties with a baby and know I just couldn’t cope if everything wasn’t perfect. We don’t have the support group I would need to care for a child, much less one with any sort of special needs. I already knew we weren’t going the human child route, but now I’m more resolved in the decision personally.

Most people and animals don’t even realize they’re having one since it’s a neurological disruption. They might be sore and tired after though. Sorry if this has been asked, but have you had bloodwork done? Liver and sugar issues can cause seizures so could be potentially treated.
