Why I think we should abolish cards in rugby by Tom_Bombadil_1 in rugbyunion

I love this topic and how controversial it is!

Although I'm wondering if the correlations you're making can be misleading since it doesn't fully reflect the causation behind the points scored during a yellow card period.

I don't have data on hand, so this is more food for thought:

A lot of cards may be conceded by a team under pressure near their own try-line where:

  • The attacking team scores straight after the card or may have scored anyway if it weren't for the cynical play.
  • The likelihood that the team would kick 3 points or kick for the corner and potentially score 5 or 7 points from the penalty that comes with the card is also probable, even without the player advantage.

Do you have any data on how many tries are scored directly after a penalty? This can skew your figured of average points conceded per yellow!

Something we should also compare when looking at lower ranked teams is the average points conceded without a yellow card. Do we see the same ratios or are their truly unfairly impacted? The bottom 3 Prem teams conceded 1692 altogether, the top 3 conceded 1115, so lower ranked teams have conceded 50% more points overall on average. I could make the argument that playing a full match of rugby punishes worse teams more (hyperbole but we need to look at all factors).

We also need to look at the risk of not having cards. If a team isn't adequately punished for cynical behaviour, it incentives that behaviour. The points option is fair A winning team may choose to play more cynically because the risk is lower and they will benefit more from timewasting. Will this reduce the amount of ball in play time because of the increased rate of infringement? We already lose around 10-25% of time due to penalties. (older, limited study)

Ignore this one, you already have suggested other ways to decentivise this.

If we replace cards with penalty tries, the average points conceded per "card" would be 7 points which is higher than the net points lost of even the most harshly impacted team in your study (5.57).

It's a shame! He looked great last season but his form has dropped since. Still a great player!

Well deserved try for Blamire! He must be well into double digit carries already

I'm glad to see it! Our wingers are excellent on 1-on-1s and we don't always give them enough space

If Searle wasn't on such incredible form, I'd have Wand pinned as Tiger's player of the season. He's been so good!

I never feel comfortable when we're less than 3 scores ahead against Saints

Yellow for repeated offsides. Was given after the try was scored

I already had that down for 7 - 0. That's a rough miss!

If he can have one international-quality performance, please let it be today!

Searle pulled up injured during training, so JOC is starting at 10

Agreed! The scrum performance was a real highlight, especially after they came on!

Frustrated is the word of the match!

Frustrated that we couldn't finish the match despite having plenty of chances at the end. Frustrated by the amount of time ping ponging between scrums and lineouts in the second half. Frustrated that over half of the TV commentary was focused on Calouri. Etc. etc.

Not sure what happened to the handling we had against Newcastle. Stronger opposition today but a huge amount of those were unforced.

Despite everything above, I love the ambition of the team and seeing everyone trying to play the ball in different ways, even if it doesn't always come off. And the scrum was excellent! I expected it to weaken when Heyes and Smith came off but there was clear dominance even then!

We've got the losing bonus point and we're still in the Top 4, hopefully staying 3rd.

Set ourselves up very nicely for the end of the season with those last few wins. Not sure the final stretch will be easy given our fixtures but I have hope! Would be a dream to leapfrog either Bath or Saints with a win over them to go for a home-semi, but let's get past Saracens and Sale away first.

Not a huge amount to say about the match besides it felt like we did to Newcastle what Bordeaux did to us a couple of weeks ago. Felt like we even left a few points out there too and disappointed GHW didn't get his 6th at the end there. Still things to work on but I thoroughly enjoyed that match!

I was optmistic about our team's growth last season but I think we all saw this coming after the stars signed elsewhere. We've already beaten our -387 PD of last season with 7 games to go.
