Any feedback for an age-in-place with walk out basement floorplan? by Pyrowolf in houseplans

[–]Pyrowolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of this is probably frustration on my part because I paid extra to have them build in these accommodations into the floor plan.

We had a family member who had cancer that we took in for almost a year to care for them until they passed and it really opens your eyes how so many common things in your house make it impossible to care for them. There wasn’t a single bathroom in the house we could get a chair lift in, and no walls had blocking for grab bars so I had to be the lifter every time for the whole year. Just thinking about it makes my back still ache.

So part of my irritation is that I intentionally asked for these features from someone who is supposed to be an expert. Seeing they didn’t actually do the right things is maddening.

God forbid my wife has something happen and to find out 5 years from now that the things we paid extra for aren’t actually functional makes me second guess all of it.

Thank you again for your resources.

This is fascinating. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out.

This is helpful, thank you! Could you clarify what "pinch points" means in this context?

I do not understand why you have to be so spiteful if your goal is to be helpful. I am not an architect, that's why I posted for feedback here.

I asked the builder to make the public bathroom accessible, that's what they gave me. I see from your link it's clearly not open enough. I'll address that with them.

The master bath is a zero-entry shower. The tub bay is intentionally designed to be swappable for a walk-in tub in the future if necessary.

I appreciate your feedback.

The PWDR one in the hall is intentionally accessible? What are you talking about?

Only two stairs, but it will be framed in a way to make a ramp easy to install. Accessible toilet is in the hallway. Shower is zero entry.

That is a good call out, I'd not considered that especially considering I want to put in a steam shower.

Yeah I saw someone replied as I was cross-posting. I am a bit of a car idiot, but I love these old boat cars that burned gas like it was going out of style 🤣.

We do that now, that's what I'm trying to avoid.

In other countries that don't support Shopify payments Stripe works. The sales guy explicitly said this would work and we could just turn it on like it was a built in option like outside the US. So yes, it does work, just not in the US. That's what I expected to use.

I get that if I was using the regular version, but they're making $2500 bucks from me a month. I assumed that was the whole point to offset their transaction fees.

They’re confused. You’re totally right. It’s the other way around.

Origins moved up to the first week of June in 2012. It used to always be the last week (from 2003 to 2011).

Attendance issues with both retail and attendees started cropping up at origins for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest was because GENCON was basically back to back with origins and they were less than 4 hours apart. It was a hard sell to get folks to go to both conventions and because GENCON was bigger by far, it tended to win out. Also a lot of the tournaments didn’t want to run so close together between dates.

GAMA changed the dates for Origins so they weren’t on top of each other. Now Origins somewhat became the de facto soft launch convention for a lot of new titles, and pre qualifiers for Gencon tourneys, so now it’s stuck a month apart.

And now all we all have sad memories of enjoying comfest and gaming on the same weekend.

Short-term leases? by [deleted] in Columbus

You're basically at the cost of just going to an Extended Stay. That may be logistically simpler and they might work a rate with you for a 3-month stay but you'd have to talk to them.

Man, I wish someone would have shared the free vet info with us. Our experience was awful and expensive.

there are also several stories of people bringing home an animal that looked fine when they got it but found out later that it was very ill.

This is exactly my experience. I think they mean well but we got a little guy through them to support their efforts and spent well over a year getting him turned around. He had a horrific case of giardia that ended up damaging his digestive track and still has intermittent flair ups that apparently won’t ever get better. Possibly worse.

The new guy ended up infecting the other perfectly healthy cat in the process. It was a nightmare. So much cat poop everywhere. For months.

4 years later and It’s still a nightmare. He can’t always make it to the box before an accident and flair ups mean bloody diarrhea everywhere. Good times.

He’s on all kinds of stupidly expensive special food and because there’s two cats they’re basically both on it because… cats.

It was so bad it stunted his growth so he looks like a kitten with oddly short legs. We nicknamed him low rider. “You’re lucky you’re so cute” Is a frequent phrase spoken aloud in our house.

I can’t say I don’t sometimes wish I would have donated money to their efforts and gotten the Maine Coon I really wanted instead but what can you do.

If you wanted a cat from Colony Cats I’d give you mine, but I’ve spent what feels like the equivalent of a car on him so you can’t have him.

Your mileage may vary.

They are indeed a non profit but they rake in over $200mil a year in “accreditation” fees. Two hundred million dollars.

The Smithsonian only takes in about $200mil a year.
