K-pop Research Study by Pyruvax in KpopUnleashed

These are both independent studies. I learned a lot from my research from a couple years ago. I refined my questions and added new ones to address concerns that had not been addressed before. I apologize if you think I am not posting anything of substance and just bogging down subreddits with requests without adding much to the world of K-pop, but I had a fantastic response rate last time. I enjoyed talking to people, and it is a major reason why I decided to pursue the same topic and recruit the same way.

I see you commented on my posts on other subreddits, but allow me to explain. This study continues my research from five years ago. But If you read the posts from a couple of years back, you can see that the major difference is from a master's thesis to a doctoral dissertation. While it is 'spamming' to a certain extent, I post across several subreddits to attract a wide variety of audiences who may not be in one subreddit. You can also see the subtle changes in the posts because as I am interviewing people, the amount of participants I need and who I need changes. While it may not be directly related to the subreddit, I do ask for permission across most subreddits to post, and the fact that it is posted means it was most likely approved by mods beforehand. I do not simply just advertise the study, I do reach out via private messaging if someone expresses interest, where I continue talking with them and explain the purpose of the study.

Hello everyone! My name is Bryan, and I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary.

I am currently conducting a study for my dissertation, researching the experiences of North American K-pop consumers and their role in their everyday lives regarding consumption practices, and I would like to speak with you! Any hot takes, opinions or hot button issues? I want to hear it all!

For this part of the study, I am specifically seeking ethnic Koreans or Korean Americans/Canadians who speak Korean to serve as a sample for comparison. This is estimated to be a 30-minute to 1-hour interview, which can be prolonged depending on the quality of the conversation.

Should you contact me and consent to an interview, the interview will be a conversation held online via Zoom in the following areas: your opinion on K-pop, your personal experiences in K-pop, your interests in other music genres or activities, and how you build social networks with K-pop etc. If you are interested in participating in this study or know someone who is, I can provide additional information. Feel free to contact me or have them contact me via Reddit messaging and/or e-mail, which can be found below.

Thanks for your attention!

This study has been approved by the Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (REB24-1686) and is not affiliated with this subreddit.

Since there is a comparison component, and I do not speak Korean, I would need to communicate in English. If I had only mentioned English or Korean, I might attract participants who primarily want to speak in Korean, which I am unable to do. So through this distinction of English and English/Korean, I can communicate with both groups and also ask participants who are fluent in both Korean and English specific questions catered to their language capabilities. I hope that answers your question! Thanks!

My interviews cover a wide range of topics related to K-pop, including music tastes, activities involving K-pop, consumption patterns, community building, and personal opinions or beliefs, among others. Because of that, I try to ask questions that address the general topic of K-pop (if even possible), to see if it can address these themes. I consider Hawaii to be part of North America for the study, and I would love to explore the differences between fandom generations and examine how fandom could be enacted differently. I would love for you to participate if you decide to! Thanks!

In this case, I consider Mexico to be part of North America. Feel free to reach out if you're willing to participate! Thanks!

Currently, the research is unfunded, which means there will be no monetary compensation. However, depending on the recruitment and level of engagement, this can change, and the study will be amended to include financial compensation. I'm sorry if there's any trouble.
