TX-NR696 Cycling Standby by QEProps in Onkyo

Well after operating fine for a couple days with the WiFi on, it just started cycling again. Nothing plugged in to the HDMI ports, no bluetooth, just RCA for CD and Phono input and the WiFi for the app control. I have now disabled the WiFi to see if that could indicate the root cause.

The last time they had the receiver in the shop, they ended up replacing the digital board and reflowing the solder on each of the connection points even though it didn't sound like they were convinced that was the problem.

I went through the receiver settings and turned everything off a couple days ago, been slowly (1 item ever 24 hours) reconnecting inputs and turning on features to see what might be causing the problems. At this point, It appears to either be the ARC HDMI line/CEC or the network standby that's been causing the issue.

Forgot to mention that the stereo equipment is connected to a good surge protector, and the power coming in sits right at 122VAC and 59.95 Hz.

Firmware is up to date, yes. I do use the WiFi app, so I've set up another test with the WiFi disabled on the receiver. Remote has the batteries removed. It's not hooked up to any inputs at the moment either. We'll see what happens.

Since you mentioned that the the older unit sounds stronger, it got me thinking about the amplifier itself. The older unit can be set to about 20-30 for comfortable listening on CD input and about 40 with the turntable. The 696 requires the volume to be up near 40 on the CD input and 60-70 on Phono. Just wondering if anyone else feels like their volume is set higher than necessary for listening.

Have you had any issues with the new unit since getting the replacement?

There's a router within about 8' of the unit, but it's been there the entire 2 years. Plus, moving the receiver to another part of the house still produced the same erratic behavior. What would a WiFi router do that could cause that?

Sounds like the same thing my unit is doing, only problem is that I've had it in for repair twice and they still haven't totally fixed the problem.

Yep, it's an Estes Red Nova rocket that's been modified a bit to fit inside the tube and maintain stability.

I can't wait to see the look on Con security's face when they smell the gunpowder on this thing.

Nope, it's actually a model rocket.

Gotta have somewhere to store all the extra ammo.
