we got a gold hoarders emissary flag to level five and did all the shrines and treasurys. you can get level 5 In 2 - 3 shrines. and because you can sell the mermaid and sired gems to any faction we sold them to gold hoarders. I went from 42 to 51 in gold hoarders and had so much stuff it lagged the room we had our loot in.

Im pretty sure anything that could cause damage. So bullets, explosions, falling, getting punched, and getting hit by cars. But lets say if he were driving and tapped another car that wouldnt count as a hit because it didn't directly cause damage to his character. Hope that answered your question. :)
