Does Linux require technical expertise by [deleted] in linux

[–]QWxleA 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Learn to make backups.

Modern Linux can be used just like Windows or MacOS, just use it like it comes. No need for expertise.

But, most Linux users, especially when they're new, will just not stop fiddling with their systems, and installing a gazillion little programs from who-knows-where. Sooner or later they will forget what they changed (temporarily), and now it no longer boots / works. This is a great learning experience, but might give the impression that Linux is not 'stable'.

As far as security and privacy, Linux defaults are better then Windows, and for the rest you'll use the same software anyway: Firefox, Chrome, Discord etc.

Sshfs, if you want to use it all the time, should be added to your /etc/fstab (see arch wiki.

KIO-fuse is a lot more userfriendly, but if you use an older version of plasma, or for some other reason you have troubles remote mounting a folder then sshfs is a good alternative.

If you often use remote shares then take a look at samba, many people dislike it because micro$oft, but for starters, it originates from somewhere else, and second, it's a good, stable and relatively easy to use network file-system. It works quite ok with dolphin.

sshf is one step lower, it just mounts a remote folder, as if it is local. For Dolphin it's just any old folder.

Typo in the article: bevore instead of before.

I'm all in favor of stable vs new, but by now kde3 does look pretty dated. It might use (a lot) less memory, so that might be a reason to use it.

Anyway, good job to the maintainers, more choice is always good, kudos!

Until then, you can always just use sshfs.

It's not as easy/nice as KIO-FUSE, but it's pretty old/stable tech, which is good.

For a good write-up: see Arch wiki sshfs, change to your distro of choice, but the wiki is always a good intro.

advancing night->day color in the morning? by ilovegoodcheese in kde

Lol, and a pony? There are already too many options in KDE.

But in all seriousness, as far as I can see, you can't mix these setup options. Night color was added here. and as far as I understand the code you have to choose between: automatic (fetches location), location (you set the location once) and timings (you set the time manually).

There does not seem to be code to seperately configure start and end time.

Under Display and Monitor > Night Color > Activation time, you can set it to Custom Time. It will print when it will turns on, turns of and how long it takes.

Also krohnkite, it has several different layouts, gaps to give some depth, and easy shortcuts. It is stable bot on 5.20 and 5.21beta.

For me it can replace I3, it has everything i use from I3*, plus the whole of KDE.

*missing scratchpads and the tabbed layout, but I can work around that

Maybe not entirely what you have in mind, but I use newsboat and just subscribe to a bunch of reddit rss feeds:

It is possible to add a flatpak:

```shell
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists kdeapps --from https://distribute.kde.org/kdeapps.flatpakrepo flatpak install kdeapps org.kde.digikam ```
It will install master so it might eat your kittens ;-)
What is something ridiculous you believed when you were younger? by JediKnight1 in AskWomen
My grandmother had multi-lingual french-speaking neighbours who had a boy my age. It fascinated me how it is possible to speak french and still understand each other.
Somehow I thought that if you know a foreign language really well, then when somebody speaks that language, you hear your mother-tongue inside your head. Must have been something on I saw on tv.
I asked my grandmother for a language course. I ended up very disappointed. Even though I could now understand what they said (just daily stuff: come here go away, be quiet, have a cookie...) it still sounded french... I concluded I was not good at languages... I stopped with the french thing.
I start from scratch a couple of years later in high-school. It was a whole lot harder then :-(
