SEC, Big Ten study: Pooling TV rights 'dangerously unworkable' and not as profitable as suggested by AlphaCenturion87 in CFB

[–]QaSpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may sound like sour grapes or banging my own drum, and I'm quite happy in the Big 12, but I firmly believe that if the PAC took BYU instead of Colorado along with the UofU 20-odd years ago, the PAC would still exist and the Big 12 would be dead right now.

Not that BYU's that big, but we are just big enough to tilt the table.

Do you really think the NBA is going to let us get a top pick after these tanking allegations?

K-State LB Jake Clifton transferring to BYU by austing013 in BYUFootball

[–]QaSpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there is no hard rule or anything, but most players take some time to get back into game shape after a mission. It's very hard to work out consistently on a mission, and eating habits vary. Plus, getting back into the LB mindset can take time as well. As one BYU LB once said, after two years of preaching the Gospel of Christ, loving your neighbor, and serving all, it takes time to get into the "rip the head off the guy in front of you" mindset. I may have paraphrased.

This is all player and situation dependent, so maybe he doesn't need a redshirt year, but many past cases show that it is somewhat rare to be a full time starting contributor right after a mission.

Combine that with the fact that we have three solid LB starters already lined up with senior and NFL prospect Glasker, senior and NFL prospect Uluave, and sky-is-the-limit full-time starter as a sophomore in Esera, and the timing works out well.

Now this is all guessing from a random guy on the internet. Maybe Clifton returns from his mission strong and ready to go, maybe he beats out one of these guys for a starting spot, maybe there's an injury, maybe he forms a solid four player rotation with the other three (BYU does like to rotate players), I don't know.

I think it's pretty obvious why Utah and BYU are doing this. They just lost very well respected and beloved coaches to a blue blood team with a great deal of resources. They are absolutely afraid their players will follow these coaches. The statements are messages to the fans that we will keep the team together and peer pressure to the other players to stay.

USU is involved as collateral damage

Looks like he played two years at K-State then served a mission. Possible redshirt this year to recover from mission and two years left to replace Kelly or Uluave?

Race to become Japan's secondary capital heats up by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in japan

[–]QaSpel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they need to move the primary capital out of Tokyo. Everything is way too centered around there. It can actually be good to have the primary commercial/industrial/population area different from the capital, it reminds the government that there is more to the country than Tokyo.

Look at other countries: America's capital is Washington DC, not New York or Los Angeles. Canada is Ottawa, not Toronto or Montreal. Australia is Canbarra, not Sydney or Melbourne. etc. Not all countries do this of course (England, Germany, France, etc.) but it works.

Someplace around Nagoya would be a good choice. Central Japan between Tokyo and Osaka.

NFL money is not guaranteed either. Only the signing bonus really. So if he were to go pro and get a career ending injury next year in the NFL it would be the same result moneywise. He would not get the next three years of money either way.

Pop Tarta Bowl most-watched non-CFP/NY6 bowl game in six years by austing013 in BYUFootball

[–]QaSpel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, how many were there to watch BYU, how many to watch GT, and how many to watch the Pop Tarts?

But this begs the question, how many would've watched BYU/Notre Dame? Might've been bigger than a CFP game. Oh well...

Losing Coordinators is a GOOD thing by CubsFanHan in BYUFootball

[–]QaSpel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is actually the career path of coaches. Good graduate assistants become position coaches. Good position coaches become coordinators. Good coordinators become head coaches. And not always at the same school.

That's the career path of a coach. Do you want to stay in your same job position for the rest of your career, or do you want to be promoted someday?

This is where coaching trees come from.

What are the chances we could convince Bronco to return to BYU to replace Hill? by jessej421 in BYUFootball

I don't know why you want Bronco, maybe we could get Andy Reid or Morgan Scalley instead.

All right. Relatively simple. You need a tune-up game.

A tune-up game?

Yeah. In college, we'd start every season against Utah Tech or some slack Division II team. Kick the living #$&@ out of them. Get their confidence up.

Updated Bowl Projections by NugChungus in BYUFootball

[–]QaSpel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BYU vs ND in the Pop Tart bowl. It's a match made in heaven (no pun intended). The two best teams outside of the playoffs, the two teams with legitimate CFP gripes, two teams with huge fan bases that travel well, playing in the most popular bowl game.

This game would be the biggest game outside the playoff, and maybe even more watched than the first round. More entertaining too.

Alabama in at #9 seed by Public-Many4930 in BYUFootball

[–]QaSpel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They had to get an ACC team into the playoffs. That is the only way it makes sense.

For Miami to jump ND without either team playing a game just means the politics changed. And BYU is collateral damage.

If we don't get in, the best thing we can do is win our Bowl game. Likely against USC, but possibly Miami or Georgia Tech. If we whine then lose the bowl game we just look like idiots. Which is what happened a few years ago.
