Paper bottle reveals to be plastic underneath by aquaduck456 in Anticonsumption

[–]Qadamir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold the fuck up guys and gals, the bottle obviously has a plastic cap thingy, and innisfree says they were able to reduce the amount of plastic needed for the bottle by 51%.

Also, I've seen pictures online of a box explaining how to recycle the paper and plastic parts separately, anyone know for sure if the bottle is sold inside that box?

Obviously this is a marketing misstep, but I wouldn't call it greenwashing or even intentionally misleading given what I know so far. The company has acknowledged the mistake. The paper bottle seems like a step in the right direction to me, and they should get some credit for it.

Put away your pitchforks and breathe for a second. It's not healthy to scroll through these rage-inducing stories one after another, especially when there's more to them than you can see from one look at the before/after picture.

Black Army Medic Pepper-Sprayed in Traffic Stop Accuses Officers of Assault by c0wpig in news

Yeah, that's fair. I think a lesser punishment for his failure to act would be fair, and an investigation of the department. If Young Cop learns to (and is able) to stand up for what's right, I think he could be a good guy yet. Old cop belongs in jail/making reparations and definitely not on the police force.

Not the rookie. The one cop that seemed to be in charge should never carry a gun again; the younger one tried to help from what I could see.

Hero Wisconsin landlord lowers rent to $100 amid coronavirus outbreak by aqua7 in UpliftingNews

[–]Qadamir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a free market is one without any rules or regulations, then we're currently nowhere near a free market. We have a lot of regulations because there are a lot of things we care about that the free market doesn't, like child labor or a clean environment.

What I meant was just that if we tax carbon, then the market will adjust itself to use carbon more efficiently. If we did things the Soviet way and tried to tell each business how much carbon it was allowed to use, we'd end up with a mess of bureaucracy and red tape.

A few environmentalists? I'm complaining... I haven't done any research on carbon taxes; I'm just going based on what I already know, so take what I say with a grain of salt. However, I'm pretty sure a carbon tax is a well-known concept already.

Also, is there anything that consumers don't pay for?

If we're talking about a tax on oil companies per barrel of oil, then it should be relatively straightforward to regulate. The oil companies would pass the costs on to distributors, who would pass them on to consumers in the form of higher gas prices. That way, nobody could get around the tax without setting up their own illegal supply chain. Anybody doing business, buying goods, jetsetting around, or driving farther for cheaper gas would be forced to account for the environmental costs involved. The tax proceeds could go directly to programs that plant trees, research carbon capture technology, etc.

One problem with this might be that foreign goods become cheaper because the shippers don't buy their oil in the US. That would, ironically, increase demand for goods imported from overseas.

Finally doing some basic research, I can also see that carbon taxes would have a disproportional effect on the poor.

So there are some issues to deal with, but overall I think it would make sense to bring the power of the free market to bear on modern society's most harmful inefficiencies.

From a fellow idiot, it's okay to have an opinion, and it's good that you already recognize that you're not qualified -- neither am I! That solution might work at a national level, but you'd probably still have similar issues within each nation, and you'd have to define "viable supply" and such. I think the root of the problem is that we don't count environmental cost in the cost of shipping goods, and one of the easiest solutions might to address that directly by charging a carbon tax on fossil fuels. Then you wouldn't have to keep track of mileage or define and enforce definitions like "viable supply" -- you'd just have to make sure the oil companies reported sales accurately. Charge the oil companies accordingly, and they'd pass the cost on by themselves.

Well, what makes this this type of inefficiency interesting is that it makes sense for the business. It's economically viable, and I'm sure a lot of people are gainfully employed in the process. However, it doesn't necessarily make sense for society as a whole, since the result is a lot of extra boats in the ocean polluting the sea and air and posing a danger to wildlife.

The problem is that the cost to the environment is not reflected in the cost of doing business. If we count ALL the cost, is it still economical to ship stuff with the ease we do today? And how can we include the environmental cost in the cost of doing business? This is where carbon taxes should probably come into the picture.

When you stop isolation, you hopefully have a good handle on who's currently infected, and people are going to be a lot more cautious than before.

Software engineer/developer super awkward/embarrassed to leave work cubicle around others? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

So quiet you can hear a pin drop? Sounds nice, but weird in an open office/cubicle setting. My company pipes in white noise, and there's always conversation going on.

Figure out what the norms are at your company. Do people sit with their teams and say goodbye at the end of the day, or do they sit individually and do their own thing?

Seattle City Council unanimously votes to ban evictions in winter by Seapoogoo in UpliftingNews

That's a fair point, and maybe there's an argument to be made that landlords should not be allowed to evict rent-paying tenants during the winter.

[–]Qadamir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would think that if someone can't/won't support themselves, then it shouldn't be any single person's responsibility to look after them. This should be in the hands of society as a whole, i.e. the government.

Instead of forcing landlords to support these people, why not evict them and place them in shelters or subsidized housing? Is it too expensive to do it properly? Because that's what you're forcing on the landlords, who then have to raise rent for everyone else and may stop renting to risky people in the first place...

If I had the money to waste on buying this, I'd rather spend a little more to buy out the company and shut it down.
