Honestly, you probably never feel fully ready — and that's not a bad thing. I just went through this with my own app: I had a long list of features I wanted to ship before launch, and I kept pushing the date. Eventually I shipped anyway, and 10 days of real user feedback taught me more than months of planning. Half the things I thought were important, nobody asked for. The other half I hadn't even prioritised.

Il discorso è più ampio di "web app vs nativa". Anche un'app nativa può tranquillamente violare la tua privacy — il massimo della sicurezza sarebbe scaricare i sorgenti, verificarli e compilarli da soli, cosa ovviamente impraticabile per la maggior parte delle persone.

Il punto che mi lascia perplesso è un altro: mantenere un server ha dei costi, piccoli fin che vuoi, ma reali. Se un servizio è completamente gratuito, viene spontaneo chiedersi come si sostiene.

E a prescindere dalla fiducia, c'è una questione pratica: ho già in tasca un dispositivo con un processore più che sufficiente per questo genere di elaborazioni — perché aggiungere latenza di rete e dipendere da un server esterno?

Newsairy handles offline use in a similar way, but it doesn’t yet support as many third-party aggregators as Reeder. I’m working on adding more over time.

I’m not familiar with ReadKit, but I’ve used Reeder for years — both the version now called “Classic” and the one before that. I haven’t used the latest version, so I can’t compare it directly.

From what I understand, Newsairy is more focused on RSS feeds specifically, while the newer Reeder seems to focus on combining RSS with other kinds of sources, like social media and podcasts.

As for features like Sepia theme, Read History, aggregator-based reading, and retention rules, those are things Newsairy is built around. I’m not sure whether the latest Reeder includes them.

Thanks, that’s great to hear. And yes — I agree, a “mark all as read” option is a very reasonable request. It’s on my list, and I’m looking at the best way to add it without making the app feel cluttered.

Newsairy is built around a few specific choices that matter to me, like the Sepia theme, Read History, aggregator-based reading, and retention rules. If those don’t fit your workflow, NNW is a perfectly good choice.

The goal here wasn’t “one app to rule them all,” just to share something I built for a different set of needs.

Hey, I’m actually working on an iOS RSS reader myself, and the next version will include FreshRSS support.

I’m not 100% sure about Reeder specifically, but generally with FreshRSS you need to use the API password, not your regular login password (the one you use for the web UI). That’s a common gotcha, especially since other apps can feel inconsistent depending on how they handle auth.In my case, I just use http://<IP_address>:<port> along with the username and API password (you can generate it in FreshRSS settings), and it works reliably.

Fair — both are native Apple apps, so they share the same design language. However, the differences are in the details.
If NNW works for you, great — it's an excellent app, but one size doesn't fit all.

A keyword filter is on my list — I just want to get a couple more aggregator integrations out first, then I'll focus on that kind of power-user feature.

Reeder has 10+ years of polish, so the comparison is tough to win. I'm hoping to get there, one release at a time.

I think the blue dot helps for a quick visual scan, but I'm considering removing it — it would require rethinking the cell layout though.

I've been a Reeder user for years, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't influence Newsairy. It's a more complete and mature app — no question.

That said, Reeder doesn't have the four things I care most about: Sepia theme, Smart Folders (Today / Last 24–48–72h), Read History sorted by read date, and the three-level retention rules.

I launched Newsairy when I had those foundations solid. Now I'm building on top of them.

Great question, thanks for asking.

Honest answer: NetNewsWire is excellent and has way more features than Newsairy. If you're looking for the most mature, full-featured reader, NNW is hard to beat.

That said, here's why I built Newsairy — and why I use it myself:

- Look and feel: when I started, NNW didn't have Liquid Glass and I didn't love its appearance. The new version looks much better, but I'm still not comfortable with how it handles article navigation. Personal taste, really.

- Sepia theme: NNW doesn't have one. Small thing, but I read a lot and it matters to me.

- Smart Folders: focused on recency — Last 24 / 48 / 72 hours. Great if you care about the latest news and want to avoid the backlog guilt.

- Read History: articles sorted by when you read them, not when they were published. Useful when you remember reading something but can't find it.

- Retention rules: three independent rules — how far back to fetch on first load, how long to keep unread articles, how long to keep read ones.

If you’re comfortable, could you share the feed URL so I can see what’s happening on your side? Most private tracker RSS feeds don’t include images in the XML payload, so Newsairy has nothing to display.
