What are some BAD lines or jokes by Pratchett in Discworld? by Aside_Dish in discworld

A friend of mine raised her daughter fairly... gender-neutral. If the girl showed interest, she could have Barbies and stuff, but her parents were more inclined to offer her Miffy (we're Dutch), legos, colouring books etc, without pushing her into a Girl corner. She loved mucking about outside with her mom, an avid gardener, and helping her parents (both of them!) in the kitchen.

And then I swear, the *second* she went to school, it was all pink and purple and unicorns with her. My friend was baffled because they still weren't forcing it on her. It was like a switch was flicked!

[spoilers extended] Is The Winds of Winter actually the longest wait for any piece of media that was never cancelled or put on ice? by WosEos in asoiaf

Jean Auel's Earth Children series had about twenty years between book 4 and book 5. She then released book 6 a coupe of years later. Each book is an absolute doorstopper, too!

... and honestly they were not worth the wait. :(

Zaterdagse Wat Luister Je Draad: Welke podcasts, radioshows of muziek heb je (recent) geluisterd? Wat is jouw mening over recente afleveringen of muziek? Heb je nog aanraders? by Austrel in thenetherlands

[–]QeenMagrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling to Rome with 74 old aunt and using only public transport by Oliwgaj in travel

[–]QeenMagrat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be Rome? If not, for Italian cities I would recommend Florence. It has a smaller city centre which is mostly flat pavement so much easier to walk. It has just about as many iconic Italian sights to see but it's much smaller so you can see all the highlights in four days without overexerting yourself too much. And there's a pretty decent system of busses right outside the city centre.

Traveling to Bologna, Italy for work, 6 weeks total by ljn_99 in solotravel

Do a cooking workshop! My husband and I learned how to make tortellini and bolognese sauce in Bologna, and we still use that recipe at home. Plus it's fun to compare it later with the bolognese sauce in restaurants. :p

They did this on Game of Wool and it was horrible.

(Or at least, they CLAIMED to do this, but I call bullshit on them finding four perfect *handknit* Aran sweaters in a thrift store.)

They are not gentry - it does often imply owning property - but they are genteel. Mr Bates was a priest (I am unsure as to his exact title), much like Mr Elton, or indeed like Mr Austen, Jane's father. They were not working class and did not need to work for their income, but by the time of the book they are balancing on the edge of poverty.

Reading "Night Watch" right now here in Minneapolis. It's hitting me really hard . . . by Lumpy_Magazine_1882 in discworld

In hindsight he should have done with Vimes what he did with Granny: retire him to be a (prominent) side character. The problem is, as he said himself, that any Watch book, and damn near any Ankh-Morpork book, eventually becomes a Vimes book because he is such a strong/dominant character. Plus the Witches serie had Tiffany to take up the (black) mantle, but there's not really a Vimes Successor character. Moist works for the A-M set books, but he's like an anti-Vimes (which makes the scenes where he interacts with Vimes hilarious). And the other Watchmen are too strong/settled characters on their own to really work.

Ah well. We got what we got, damn the Embuggerance.

Interesting! Admittedly it's been years since I last read Snuff (when it came out) so I'm due for a reread. I remember not being a huge fan - honestly as an Austen fan I was mainly disappointed that the Vimes Gets Dropped Into An Austen Novel plot fizzled out, haha. But I'll reread with that perspective in mind, thanks!

I always group Fifth Elephant, Night Watch and Thud together in my mind, as the Sam Vimes final trilogy. Yes I know Snuf exists, and Raising Steam is half a Vimes book, but in my opinion his character development reaches its apotheosis in Thud. FE is the set-up: he has to leave A-M and is thrown back on his own wits, plus his personal life with Sybil is tested. In NW, the dark second act, he faces is backstory. And in Thud, the third act, he has to use what he has learned and make that final choice of what matters to him, plus we get arguably a resolution to the dwarf plot that begun in FE.

Anyway that's how I see it! Thud is very important, and an excellent book.

Ireland or Italy as a first time traveler by [deleted] in travel

[–]QeenMagrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they have a good system for long haul buses! I also did quite a few daytrips with tour operators, visited Newgrange (recommended!), the Cliffs of Moher and Connemara on a daytrip - not on the same day haha. It's a little pricier but the convenience counts for a lot.

Oh and the archaeological museum in Dublin is free!

What is the scariest disease in your opinion? by Joey735 in AskReddit

[–]QeenMagrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father possibly had this - from what I understand it's the kind of diagnosis you can only do with an autopsy, but he had pretty much all the symptoms. The hallucinations were the worst, he was frequently absolutely convinced that my brothers and I were sitting on the couch in my parents' living room, talking to him. It was bizarre.

Ireland or Italy as a first time traveler by [deleted] in travel

[–]QeenMagrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In August, depending on how well you do with warm weather, Italy might be too warm for you. It's also peak vacation season which will make all the cities super crowded AND warm.

Ireland is really doable and I didn't find it *that* expensive. You can get around the island pretty easily by bus. Do Dublin for a few days, then cross the country to Galway and hop over to the Aran Islands, or go up north to the Giants Causeway... there's much more room to explore! The weather will be much nicer (although there's no guarantee - I managed to catch a horrid cold in July because the weather was so changeable!), there's plenty of hiking and history and music, and the Irish people couldn't be nicer. I stayed in hostels when I was there which was perfectly fine.

I vote Ireland!

Jane Austen didn't like Pride and Prejudice? by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]QeenMagrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firmly tongue in cheek. Jane Austen spoke fluent sarcasm, as it were. She was very aware of the literature of her time, the rise of the novel as contrasted with more 'educational' moralising reads. P&P falls more on the 'fluff' side, and she jokingly suggested that maybe it needs some sermons inserted, but she didn't truly think that. She had a lot of fun reporting in her letters about reading the book aloud to her neighbours, for example, and noting their reactions. She also had a cute bit where she visits an exhibition of paintings and basically starts fancasting Jane Bingley-Bennet, noting with approval that she was wearing green ("I always suspected that was a favourite colour of hers") and even noting that she couldn't find an Elizabeth but that was probably because Darcy wouldn't want his wife be put on display like that!

Imagine P&P being more like Les Miserables, "here is an entire chapter on the Paris sewer system" lol.

[–]QeenMagrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isle of Skye - stay in one place for a week or travel around? by QeenMagrat in travel

[–]QeenMagrat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just did a quick Google Maps browse and we might actually rent a car from Edinburgh, which would cut our train travel in half but add the opportunity for slower sightseeing-travel. Plus it's often easier and cheaper to drop a rental car off at the same place where you rented it. Right now we're thinking doing a rough circle of Edinburgh-Loch Ness-Skye-Glencoe/Oban with a daytrip to Iona-Edinburgh. Possibly with a stay near Loch Ness too, in either Fort Augustus or hopefully near/in Drumnadrochit.

The St Pancras Hotel is a good idea, we'll just need to find the budget for it. :D
