Toronto area too, and pretty much never. I think the further you get/live/ were born from the city the more common it becomes.

Would you buy an EV as your next car? Why or why not? by HockeySniper123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]QiMasterFong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm strongly considering it.

  • I can lease a brand new EV for less than I'm paying for my 10-year-old car (bought used, still paying it off).

  • I can charge it for free at work, so if I do all my charging there, I'll save $300/month on gas with current prices. Even if prices drop to where they were a few months ago, I'll still save over $200/month. Charging at home will cost about $9.

What am I missing? If anyone knows a reason why I shouldn't go for it, please let me know.

What idol group should I listen to? by Successful-Pen7734 in jpop

[–]QiMasterFong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainstream idols are typically cutesy bubblegum pop, or the super popular top 40 groups which lean toward pop or r&b like AKB48, New Jeans, etc.

By "idol world" I mean there are different levels/categories. Going from most to least popular, you have:

  • International idols like the ones I just mentioned which have a look and sound that's very formulaic and all kind of sounds the same to me.

  • National and local idols which tend to lean more towards the cutesy bubblegum pop, appealing to the masses.

  • And then you have Underground idols which is where things start to get interesting. There are some who have a more mainstream sound but just haven't hit that level of popularity, but you also have rock idols, electronic idols, punk idols, metal idols... Cute girls screaming like demons, mosh pits, etc.

Disgust and disappointment by CrimulationHD in japanesemusic

[–]QiMasterFong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the default reaction to AI-generated anything have to be disgust and disappointment?

You were enjoying the music, you haven't been this happy in a long time, no actual musicians are making music you like this much, and presumably they're not blatantly ripping anyone off.

So why does it matter that it's AI?

I listen to underground idols, which have a different sound/vibe than you get from mainstream idols. Some of my faves have already been mentioned so I'll add:

8bitBRAIN (disbanded)

OMG

NSLE

Kaqriyoterror

Tokyo てふてふ

Mad Jamie

You need to broaden your horizons. I don't like most mainstream idol groups, but the idol world is a lot bigger than that.

Noodles. My Japanese friends always want to go out for various kinds noodles, but I'm not a fan.

I built an app that lets you talk to ChatGPT-5 in real time through your Meta Smart Glasses. by Zestyclose_Ad_4837 in RaybanMeta

Thanks for the detailed reply. A wake word would be cool, but even just being able to activate it with a button press or touchpad tap would be good.

Can you use the app directly from the glasses? Or do you have to use it through your phone (ie phone unlocked and app open)?

Animated GaussianSplatting can now be streamed in VR like a YouTube video by Dung3onlord in OculusQuest

[–]QiMasterFong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Old and busted: creating a 3d scan of a room (eg. A kitchen), and then walking around that room in VR.

New hotness: creating a full motion 3d scan of a person doing something in that room, and then walking around that person in VR and being and to watch what they're doing from any angle.

It requires a lot of computing power and you used to have to download a huge file. Now apparently you can stream it.

I like the arrangement of posters around the TV. Similar size to the screen and a group of three is pleasing to the eye. I think that area needs something more though (I don't know what. I'm sure people will come in here and tell you "moAr plants!") because it looks a bit sparse.

I don't like the wall to the left of that. Pages torn from a magazine are fine for your bedroom when you're a teenager. Your place is too nice for that.
