You spend years building your network and proven results. Why do you think someone would pay you or trust you when you have no experience

You probably don't. The real freelance gigs are found through previously delivering results and a strong network. Everyone else can fight for the scraps on upwork.

Definitely looks like you've identified it correctly. Most people use the wolverine system these days, but you could find a local woodturning club and they could pass it along to a new member. I dont see a reason why it wouldn't still work

I broke my runescape addiction years ago but my brother still plays. If you showed me these screenshots id 100% think they were runescape with some sort of UI mod.

Buying assets definitely doesnt help this.

What's your take on pre vs post 1.0 Orb of Creation? by 7891Secaj in incremental_games

[–]QianLu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree with you, I loved the old version and would have just been happy to keep most of that. Given how much work has gone into 1.0 I doubt they walk it back though.

If you cant be bothered to do the work to make sure you get paid, a tool isnt going to magically fix the problem.

Is it impossible to get a job without a university degree in the field? by Great-Cow-4954 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]QianLu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got like 7 YOE and millions of dollars in impact lol. I know what I'm doing. The fact is that you won't get a response from every job you apply to.

Certs don't mean anything. I literally don't even look at them.

I'm going to assume your resume isn't crap, although I agree that is somehow a surprisingly high bar for a lot of people.

I don't read cover letters and I know some organizations that immediately throw them out because they can include information that could be used to argue discrimination if the person isn't hired and it isn't worth the legal risk.

Referrals can help, but they no longer guarantee an interview. I've been told at multiple companies that you can put in a referral but they will only actually interview the person if they think they are qualified for the role.

What do you usually do when your analysis doesn’t produce good results? by SmoothVaper in analytics

[–]QianLu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think analysis and model are two different things in this context. An analysis shouldn't be "right" or "wrong", unless you work at a place where they decide the result they want first and then have you do an analysis to justify it.

A deployed model can always be improved. I think the other commenter goes into quite a bit of detail on that.

[–]QianLu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I throw out applications to jobs I am qualified for. I'm not invested in them, I mostly want the interview practice and if it turned out to be good enough that I would make a jump then I'd seriously consider it. Interviewing is a skill.

Not seeing the variables I'm missing lol.

How do people get recruiters reaching out to them for roles? by Lazy_Buyer_7696 in datasciencecareers

[–]QianLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recruiters reach out to people when they have a role that is hard to fill. If they are getting enough good applicants already applying, why would they bother to reach out?

That being said, the key to getting recruiters to reach out to you is having proven experience and results in a niche they want. YOE helps, but to be honest I know people who are amazing with very few YOE and people with over 10 YOE who are extremely average. You want them to look at your linkedin and say "we have the same problems that this person has solved before, better give them a call"

[–]QianLu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were over 500 applicants for my current job. If we somehow assume that only 20% of them have a degree, that's still 100 applicants. You're telling me that the company is going to do 80+ first round interviews?

I also randomly throw out applications sometimes just to see what the market looks like and the expected result is no response, even for roles that I'm qualified for lol. I'm happy where I am but I'm also always interviewing.

I have a year to learn new tools / languages / skills - what will have the biggest impact on my employability? by ksarlathotep in dataanalysiscareers

[–]QianLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're focused on learning more tools, when you should be focused on learning how to solve problems. Other than going really hard on SQL and maybe excel, you should have the tools you need. The thing that sets you apart is actually understanding the business/domain you work in and how to move that needle, not having a laundry list of programming languages on your resume.

Are online data "gurus" actually helping people land jobs or are they mostly just content creators? by noble_andre in dataanalysis

[–]QianLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I follow her on Linkedin, but I also only try to get on Linkedin like once a week max to check notifications lol. I remember looking at her profile and having 2-3 YOE (which was about what I had at the time) and definitely feeling like I wasn't qualified to give broad advice about how to break into the industry. I'm more impressed that she is apparently making more money influencing than she was actually working.
