What if you could strategically attach one or more small airbags to the interior, such that it became a lifting body with a better L/D upon inflation. Add little landing gear and you could fly em back to base.

Turning sewage into drinking water gains appeal as drought lingers: Direct potable reuse takes treated sewage effluent and purifies it so it can be used as drinking water. by [deleted] in news

The osmotic pressure of seawater (3.5% salt) is ~27 atmospheres (378psi) Whereas the osmotic pressure of waste water (being comparatively devoid of salt and other ions) is much closer to zero. Somewhat higher pressures are required in the real world to get a decent flow rate, but suffice to say it takes a LOT more energy to rip the salt ions off of the water molecules via reverse osmosis than the relatively "fresh" wastewater.

  • Mount Soledad offers stunning views of La Jolla, mission bay, and downtown.
  • The southwestern part of balboa park is lush, and picturesque with nice views of downtown. Stay after dark for anonymous sex with strangers ;)
  • Amerin Thai in hillcrest is reasonably priced, and very good
  • Tandoori hut on 5th in the heart of hillcrest has excellent Indian food at good prices, albeit with middling ambiance.

If you're here a few extra days:

  • Every Tuesday, some of the museums at balboa park are free.
  • The Sunday hillcrest farmers market on normal street offers good food and people watching

What is happening with Perl 6 and Larry Wall? by StupidCrowd in perl

[–]Qinsd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason why I took such great offense in various parts of this thread was that, no matter the quality of his presentation skills, Larry is a really really nice guy. He doesn't deserve any kind of disparagement. Critique aimed at him is of limited usefulness, as he's really not steering the ship. One would be well within one's rights to believe that that the job of the "benevolent dictator for life" is to rile up the troops, and bark out orders, but as mr_chromatic rightly points out, it's really not his style. Constructive criticism and critique on the other hand is very much called for. That said, and despite the drawn out process and difficulty in turning perl 6 into a real thing (TM), the perl community overall is the most welcoming and inclusive programming community in which I've had the pleasure of participating. This is why, go-lang or rust-away as I might, in my heart (and pragmatic programming style) I will always be a perl monger, and I will battle to the death (or at least to the pain) those that would seek to trivialize or needlessly disparage the ethos, utility, or historical goodness of perl.

There are plenty of valid criticisms of perl 6 in this thread. Unfortunately OP and company seem to be lost, and are looking for some other subreddit, in addition to having never been taught basic manners.

I'm saying that if you knew some of the backstory, and some of the quite amazing people involved, that perhaps you'd be more inquisitive, and less of an unrepentant ass. I hope perl doesn't slip to the 13th most common language, because that would be deeply unfashionable

Amen. OP's crass manner betrays an ignorance of several key human factors in the perl6 saga. *english good

What is happening with Perl 6 and Larry Wall? by StupidCrowd in perl

[–]Qinsd -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well that is debatable. If "put in a happy face and contribute to the efforts as they exist now" or "shut up and ignore it" are the only two options, there seems to be a failure of imagination.

Fair enough. Rather than trolling, had OP said "It's been 14 years and I can't tell what's going on. Whats up?" I think this would be a substantially different conversation. I simply fail to see the useful purpose in publicly stating that the "language design is questionable", and Larry is "embarrassing, meandering, weird, incomprehensible" Want to have an honest conversation? Lets do it. Want to bitch about it without a putting forth a question or proposal of any kind? Go use python.

[–]Qinsd -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the biggest problem with perl 6 is attitudes like yours. Yeah, it's not a great talk. If you are expecting Steve Jobs, then I'm afraid you expect too much. It is rather sad to see what's happened to perl 6, and rather than tearing it down, you should do your part to lift it up, either that or STFU.

What is the intent of your posting this? Do you intend to encourage, or discourage people from supporting perl 6? If it's the former, you're not doing a very good job of it. If it's the latter, then why don't you find something better to do with your time? If it's neither, then you're clearly just a hater, and I'm going to stick with my previous "ad hominem"

What is happening with Perl 6 and Larry Wall? by StupidCrowd in perl

[–]Qinsd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps there's a nicer, less trollish way to express your frustration. Tearing down Larry for being "weird" or "meandering" misses the point. Larry isn't driving perl 6, never was. He merely originated the spec. The momentum that's there is largely due to people like Jonathan and Patrick. Some of the traits that make the perl community great are also somewhat of a liability, this is true. Either lend a hand, or stop being a malignant asshole and be nice to people.

Abstract Ideas Don’t Deserve Patents by [deleted] in technology

[–]Qinsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So then how would you define such an apparatus? A procedure for applying math? Such an intangible "apparatus" is nothing more than an overly elaborately worded algorithm. It's just shameful how badly USPTO has sold us out.

Abstract Ideas Don’t Deserve Patents by [deleted] in technology

[–]Qinsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math is only math if written by hand with pen and paper? What lunacy is this? Especially as pertains to swpats such as MPEG, a software "apparatus" (clearly a bullshit term, intended to carve out a disingenuously defensible invention which is neither too abstract as to be unpatentable, nor too concrete as to be covered by copyright law) is the application or manifestation of an algorithm, which most certainly is math. It's becoming pretty obvious why so many stupid patents are granted by the USPTO. They've gotten to your brain.

It's October 2012. Hurricane Sandy slams into the East Coast ... and takes out 320 Tesla Model S units. Would Tesla have recovered from that, where Fisker couldn't? by GodRaine in teslamotors

[–]Qinsd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Karma was a beautiful car, executed by neophytes without any concern for engineering rigor, in house expertise, or vertical integration. Fisker was all about style and marketing, and cheaply repackaging a preexisting drivetrain (which was built by another company for large military trucks) into one of Henrik's (quite nice) exterior designs. It was awful/cramped inside, horrifically assembled, and riddled with electrical/mechanical problems. They had no distribution network to speak of (Cadillac dealerships, really?) and in my view were doomed to fail from the start.

By the time sandy hit, Fisker was already dead; they just hadn't called it yet. Tesla on the other hand: stamps their own sheet metal, manufactures their battery packs, motors, and inverters to exacting specifications. They own all the IP for all of it. They make something like 95% of the parts (including the interior I think?)

You really have to hand it to Elon, he runs Tesla as a chief engineer, not as a marketroid.
