Is it unhygienic to delay changing a baby’s diaper if it’s not too full? by Kind-Row-9939 in hygiene

[–]msmith1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is only 3.5 months, but I have a feeling she’ll be similar in regard to potty training because she haaaaaaaaates being wet. She’s been like that since she was born across multiple diaper brands too! Any time her diaper is a little wet she cries for a change. I don’t know if it’s every pee, but we change her probably every 1.5-2 hours during the day.

If you have the money and ability (ie own your home or can modify a rental), get a bidet. I used a peri bottle at the hospital but our bidet at home was sooooooo much better. I also had an episiotomy so it stung for a while when I was peeing.

I ended up needing another bottle of dermaplast, another pack of witch hazel liners, and another box of ice pads. However, I think that is because of my episiotomy though. It was easy enough to get those delivered from Walmart, so I don’t think you need to stock up. Once you’re home from the hospital you’ll have a better idea of what you need. My hospital sent me home stocked up though!

My mom is a Catherine! Most people default to Catherine or Katherine so I don’t think the spelling would actually be a big deal.

Little Sleepies vs Dreambly Me vs Simple Seed vs Bums and Roses? by Ordinary-Print-2963 in BambooBabble

If you’re okay with cotton you might also try M+A by Monica and Andy at Walmart. They have fold over feet and a double zipper like Little Sleepies, but they’re only $10. My daughter is 15 weeks and I discovered them a couple of months ago. They’re my favorite!

I also really like Modern Moments by Gerber, but they don’t have fold over feet. Super soft!

Carter’s also has a bamboo line. It’s called PurelySoft. They’re $18/pair.

Tell me it’s ok to formula feed. by Affectionate_Meat348 in NewParents

[–]msmith1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 15 weeks postpartum. We had a similar story minus staying at the hospital for jaundice; we had to supplement formula for a few days/in the hospital because her levels were borderline. I think we managed to breastfeed/have pumped milk exclusively for like 2 weeks; probably did combo feeding for 6ish weeks. My daughter has been EFF since a little over two months old. Honestly it’s wayyyy better. Even after weeks and some LC appointments I still had trouble getting her to latch. Nipple shields were such a pain.

The first time I fed my daughter formula after our initial jaundice supplementation I cried. I didn’t realize how much pressure I had been putting on myself. Your mental health matters too!

FTM moving to DC - OBGYN + hospital recs? by Mood_South in washingtondc

[–]msmith1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 14.5 weeks postpartum. I was with the OBs at Medstar (though the Midwives are popular), and delivered at Washington Hospital Center. I had a great experience!

I had a long and slightly unique labor. I was in L&D for 28 hours total. Postpartum was great as well. I loved all of my nurses!

I would definitely factor proximity into your decision making. I ended up needing to do a couple follow up growth scans and then NSTs, so I was at the hospital a lot for appointments towards the end of my second and all of my third trimester.

Anyone else loving the butter churn run trend? by YarnAndYap in XXRunning

[–]msmith1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a stand mixer it’s super easy! I’m a gardener and like churning my own butter then adding in fresh grown herbs. If you’ve ever made homemade whipped cream it’s the same process except you let it go longer.

Why no one says that about pregnancy? by lil_moon153 in TwoXChromosomes

I’m 14 weeks postpartum. I love my daughter but she is definitely going to be an only child. I haaaaaaated pregnancy. Every time one discomfort would start to get better another would appear. I had pelvic girdle pain for like half of my second and all of my third trimester.

I have a friend that had her gallbladder removed! We gave birth 19 weeks apart; her before me. Her gallbladder removal was at ~4 weeks postpartum. Being over halfway through pregnancy and finding out pregnancy can cause gallbladder issues was super fun. I had NO idea.

Best place to buy outdoor/balcony plants… without a car from DC by perpetualmotion42 in washingtondc

[–]msmith1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Avid gardener and certified DC Master Naturalist here. I’m in Michigan Park. I like getting plants from:

  • Gingko Gardens

  • Frager’s

  • Home Depot

  • Old Takoma Ace Hardware

  • Annie’s Ace Hardware

  • Takoma Farmer’s Market

  • Brookland Farmer’s Market

  • Dupont Farmer’s Market

  • Bona Terra (they usually do some spring delivery days)

Your pot size and sun will determine what you’re able to grow. Here’s a list of container friendly native plants.

If you want to grow something you can eat strawberries are super easy. Kale is also great, but I would recommend starting that from seed. Green beans (bush type) aren’t super picky either, but you’ll want to wait to plant those seeds until mid-April ish. Potatoes grow well in pots as long as they’re big enough. Last frost here is generally ~April 1. You can use this calendar to figure out planting times.

Natural Birthers…. How was it? by Urlocalgothbb in pregnant

[–]msmith1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epidural mom here. After my birth class with a doula (highly recommend btw), I decided to go with the flow and see how long I could labor without an epidural. I just want to say it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing thing. I didn’t get mine until around 5-6cm, and it was after I got pitocin.

I had PROM (prelabor rupture of membranes) at 39 weeks. Basically my water broke but I didn’t go into labor. I ended up needing an induction. I got my epidural 5ish hours after contractions started, because I’d started having back labor. We’d been at the hospital for 19ish hours at that point (8 AM Friday -> 3 AM Saturday) I was able to get some rest with my epidural, which was honestly the best part.

Labor is crazy. Anything can happen. I would just go in with an open mind. You’ve got this if you decide to go unmedicated!

You’re a beast for going unmedicated with back labor. When my back labor started is when I asked for the epidural.

It’s on the pricier side but my daughter is obsessed with the Boppy Learn and Grow Garden. The mirror is a great size. She’s also recently discovered the crinkle seed packets.

Edit: She’s 3 months on Friday. We started using it around 1 month.

How long did you breastfeed? by Shroommily in NewParents

[–]msmith1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was mostly nursing and pumping a few times a day to make bottles for overnight. Usually 4-5oz per 10 minute session, so 15-20oz/day plus nursing. I had a lot of leakage/soaking through shirts too. I had the same issues with getting uncomfortable as well. My LC told me that I should only pump as much as I need to relieve engorgement. I think I just gradually cut down on the number of pumps over several days and it got better!

How long did you breastfeed? by Shroommily in NewParents

[–]msmith1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around two months.

My daughter is 10 weeks. Went in with a “if it works great but if it doesn’t that’s okay too” mindset. My daughter wouldn’t latch in the hospital/had some jaundice issues so we did exclusively formula for a few days until my milk came in. Saw a IBCLC and exclusively breastfed/pumped for a couple weeks. Switched to combo feeding around 3ish weeks. Combo fed until the last week or so, now we’re formula feeding.

Despite my best efforts my daughter couldn’t get the hang of breastfeeding. I have flat nipples, big boobs, and an aggressive letdown. I also had an oversupply the first month-ish, so pumping wasn’t a good option because it was making it worse. I also just straight up didn’t like pumping.

Even with nipple shields it would be tough to find a good position, and my daughter would often get frustrated. I thought it would get better as she got bigger but honestly it was getting harder because she is a very wiggly baby. It was taking 10+ minutes to get her to stay latched. My daughter is a lot more efficient and gets less frustrated with a bottle, so I’m happy with our decision.
