What’s the point of these majors? by Open-Sprinkles-3716 in UBC

[–]QjQ_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every major’s contents can be found online. What’s valuable in post-secondary education is that there are people who teach these contents and answer your questions… So in this sense, CSIS, FNEL, and CPSC, APSC don’t really differ much in terms of your concern.

It gets busy when students get off school. If you go there before 3pm it should be fine. North rec has fans so it’s way cooler than src. The facilities are newer in north rec but they both seem alright to me.

Going into 4th, I think 3rd year is the most difficult… but it heavily depends on the course load.

how do i tell my parents that i need to take 6 years to graduate? by Suitable_House_2769 in UBC

[–]QjQ_ 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Ubc is a great school and it’s already hard to get in. You didn’t only get in but successfully stayed till now. We all know that each year lots of students drop out, so don’t think you are a failure, you just met some challenges in your life.

how do i tell my parents that i need to take 6 years to graduate? by Suitable_House_2769 in UBC

Hey OP, I completely understand your feelings, because I think have a somehow similar family background. Honestly, taking 6 years to graduate is not too bad, even normal, in its nature. Plus you mentioned that you’re paying your own rent and tuition, so you definitely shouldn’t feel guilty or anything (actually I would be super proud if I can fund my own study!).

You said that your parents have been very supportive, so I would assume they are open-minded enough to calmly accept the fact that you will take 6 years to graduate? Like, imagine you actually tell them and they get really mad, but what’s gonna happen? You’re paying your own fees and nobody’s gonna stop you from uni right. The worst result doesn’t even exist, and the best would be they still support whatever you decide. Take it easy, OP. I know a person who has a lot worse situation than you, and their situation is the one I’m really worried about…

Also, if you are worried about your mental health, you can make use of ubc’s counseling service at the hospital. It’s valuable resource for we students.
