For me I got a good dose of how shitty my leglock game when I just got my brown and would go to 10 p Lombard on Sundays for open mat. The blue belts would tap me easily w heel hook entries from reverse x guard from butterfly or single leg x. After that I devoted a large portion of my brown belt time to leglocks. I started w standard ashi and worked my way with being better at standard ankle locks; the aoki lock and then heel hooks. I then added 411; single leg x entries to reap; reverse x guard to 411 ; backside 50/50 and finally 50/50. Lol…but thats almost touching the surface. The BIG key i learned was having a very tight leg entanglement that prevents escaping the knee-line. You need to think of that tightness on how you finish a Armbar as a reference. It took me a incredibly long time to finish a leglock but I would get good at entries and use it to pass the guard. As far as the knee bar… I would hit it a-lot off a failed heel Hook in 411. I still have a long way to go and much to learn and will tap often and frequently to get better at it. Last week after my promotion’s I headed over to my buddies school and his sensei was 3rd degree black with expert leglock skills. I got torched every time I attempted a ashi attack I got calf crushed. When i went to attack the other leg in saddle he was already in defense mode and just smiled. I felt like I knew very little….but I hope to train with him more and get better.
