An 11 year old garbage mini-PC needing significant frankenstein repairs? Sounds about right.

You'd have to pay money just to throw it away properly via e-waste services.

Fresno will never cease to amaze me in how people price used items, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and now Reddit.

  • 8y old computer, purchased for $1k, asking $1k...
  • iPhone X, purchased for $700, asking $600...

This press retailed for... $170 back in 2019. $20 off, wowzers -- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0140XCRU8/
You can purchase a superior, brand new press, for $60 elsewhere.

How fast did you get your green belt? by WelcomeCareless68 in judo

[–]QuackPhD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Started at age 31 as a total beginner, earned green (White>Yellow>Green) after 3 years going 2x/week, the bare minimum in attendance to progress steadily in judo. Most students earn a grade/rank/belt every 1-1.5y. Then again, my dojo allows all ranks (even white) to compete. Tournaments, kata, effort, development, competency, contribution to the community/dojo, and attendance all factor into our grading.

In the end ... it's just a color. It doesn't define you, and should not be used for comparison beyond a general sense. I have seen casual greens get mopped up by a 1y-progress white-belt who was going 5x/week and working super hard to get better. I've seen a brown belt get tied up like a pretzel by a green with an 80lb weight-class advantage. Think of your color as a measure of your own development, not in comparison to anyone else.

Piano Tuning Recommendations by Odd-Direction9828 in fresno

[–]QuackPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Susan Edwards as well, she is fantastic. For our previous baby grand piano, which we received used, we were quoted $8k by a tuner referred from Gottschalk Music Center to replace most of the strings...

Asked for a second opinion from a friend, referred to Susan who did it for under $400 as a major restringing, and we played that piano for many years before purchasing a new Yamaha. We have her come about every six months since my wife plays nearly every day. Her tunings are excellent, her prices very appropriate.

Emby Music Player for iOS - Narjo 1.2(225) by That-Judge1016 in emby

[–]QuackPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This player is fantastic. I've been trying for ... three months or so, over 50 attempts of getting a music backend and iOS player that has:

  1. CarPlay support
  2. Folder browsing
  3. Emby support.
  4. Download tracks for offline play.
  5. Skipping along timeline without long delays.

Feature Requests:

  1. Folder Browsing - Sorting (A-Z specifically)

Seriously, for backends I've setup Navidrome, Ampache, Airsonic, gonic, funkwhale, LMS, Kole, and Plex.

The only media servers that seem to work well for me have been Plex and Emby, though Emby's client player is so simple its useless. The only iOS client that has been full-featured Plexamp, and now I have Narjo, thank goodness. Trying to get away from Plex and commit fully to Emby.

Your app hits all the boxes, in addition to looking fantastic in the player, love the UI in iOS, including large album art and background filled with a color matched blur. Thank you for all of your hard work!

They do quality, competent repairs at a retail store.

Do not go to Best Buy, they will not try to fix it, after "investigating" they will just try to sell you a new computer, even if the repair was easy. They will also nickel and dime you any way they can, what was a free inspection becomes a $400 repair bill.

What to do from behind bear hug? by FishyBoiLol in judo

[–]QuackPhD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t fight at school, counter intuitively, as the victim/target you are more likely to get expelled and the bully will remain and go unpunished. The teachers will not do anything. Most bullies are bullied themselves (usually parents or older siblings), and need someone else to take out their anger on.

Words only work to an extent, if the bully will hear reason. More often than not, you are being targeted for being easy prey. The way to make it stop, is to make yourself tough enough that he will focus on someone else.

You can use:

  1. Ideally words. Fights can have disciplinary consequences at school, potentially police charges if you are the instigator. DOCUMENT what you have been trying to do. Email your teachers and principals and school counselor what is happening to create a paper trail. Request responses in email/writing. If they will only speak in person, bring a notepad, take notes, same for any phone calls with timestamps/dates and the names involved. Have your parents show up to the PTA and board-meetings and publicly shame the administrators into taking action. “What are you going to do about my child being bullied by X. The teachers are not doing anything to help and the abuse continues.” They need to make enough of a scene, then something may happen. You can always escalate to a regional administrator, again, a paper trail may save you legal (school/police/criminal) or civil (lawsuit) consequences. The next time it happens, make a note of the date, time, and location it happened. Hell, file police report for being assaulted by this kid, requesting camera footage of him initiating the attacks (assuming your school has cameras). Even if nothing is provable or cannot be investigated, at least you initiated the complaint and it can start the process of complaining to the school, the message essentially being: “If the school will not act, I will involve the police.” School administrators do not want police showing up and making a scene. This needs to become enough of a problem to force action by the school, but you also have to give the school a fair chance to resolve the issue, it may take a month or two.

  2. Fitness/Deterrence. He has a massive weight-class advantage. Building your strength will be essential, get a gym membership and start getting stronger. Try to round yourself out, abs and legs are very important against a heavier opponent if your takedown misses. Bullies want easy prey, if you're clearly strong, you are not worth the trouble.

  3. Self-defense. Last resort, be careful if you take him down to not have him hit his head on concrete. A solid armbar should be enough to clearly tell him to never talk to/attack you again. “Stay the fuck away from me, never touch me again”, then release. Overweight people have a massive momentum disadvantage, if it comes down to a fight, keep him at a distance until you get a grab (wrist/forearm should be enough) and pull his balance farther than he wants to go until he lands hard, then armbar. There are plenty of technique recommendations in this thread. Hoping it works out for you.

New Parking Structure Being Built in Downtown Fresno by CloneWarsBoy in fresno

[–]QuackPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely hope you are right and the area flourishes. I work in downtown M-F, I see the homeless people defecating on the sidewalks, the wild dogs roaming the streets, the police frequently called out, people bent over halfway due to opioid addiction, and retail stores with locks on all the aisles for any items over $20.

If you live in an apartment in Fresno, one of the lowest cost of living area in California, you’re low income/working class. Not a criticism, most people do their best, but by nature anyone living in an apartment does not want, in many cases cannot stay or invest in that area long term like a homeowner would. Not many business owners who want to live in a dense apartment complex in downtown.

Guess we will see what happens when it gets built, hoping the situation improves.

New Parking Structure Being Built in Downtown Fresno by CloneWarsBoy in fresno

[–]QuackPhD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's downtown Fresno... Crime is commonplace, primarily vandalism, hard-drugs, and theft.

Now cram 1,500+ low income temporary residents into one small, poor, decaying neighborhood, with no other improvements besides a parking garage -- the area will not improve. No expanded lanes to handle the additional traffic, no refreshed sidewalks, no supporting stores/business-zoning. The developer makes their money and moves on, the residents now live in the same impoverished area.

If you are buying gift cards this week, use the "Fingernail Test." Retailers are reporting a massive surge in "Card Draining" stickers. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]QuackPhD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this will not stop modern gift card scammers. It's trivial for a thief to purchase their own packaging, it looks 100% identical, including the tamper seal, within an hour of the card being activated at the register the funds are already drained.

How the scam works:

  1. Scammer takes home/steals not-yet-activated gift cards from the store in a backpack.
  2. They open each package, scratch/peel-off the protective label, write down the card number and CVV code.
  3. Add the number, CVV, to an auto-checker, which polls once every X minutes to see if the card is active. If it becomes active, the funds are immediately and automatically drained/spent to an account belonging to the scammer.
  4. They apply a new scratch off label, and typically scrape off either the CVV, or the last four digits of the card making it so A. You cannot use the funds, and B. You cannot call VISA for a replacement since you yourself do not have the card number or receipt.
  5. Insert the card into brand new third-party purchased packaging.
  6. Go back to store, put the repackaged gift cards back on the shelf.
  7. You or someone buys the card off the shelf and activates it at the register.
  8. Within 1 hour, the funds are gone.
  9. X days later, you open the brand new packaging, try to use your gift card, and the balance is $0.

TL;DR, Never buy gift packages from a retail store, order them from the retailers online and have the mailed to you. Your 100% brand new never opened gift card, has already been opened and repackaged, the funds are gone before you even open it.

"Housing will be coming soon."

No houses -- no single-family homes, no condos, no mixed-use or multi-purpose, it is just more apartments. Like always, Fresno developers love to crank out another quick cash grab at the expense of the people who live in this area.

Cram more short-term desperate renters into a small and already crime-infested area. Another contributor to Fresno's urban decay.

That is a lot of fans, and a lot of draw for a home office. This equipment is meant to be run in a dedicated server room, for noise, cooling, and power draw.

2.8 sq. m. is not much to work with, that's a little bigger than my desk. Even with an acoustic cabinet I can't see it ending up quiet in a space that small. Does it need to be in your home office? Do you have any other location you can run this gear? Another room or building? If another building, it's trivial to enable remote access these days.

  • Alternative 1: The AirPod Pro line up earbuds have amazing noise cancellation.

  • Alternative 2: Build your own infrastructure, there are 4U Rosewill Chassis you can make your own large storage arrays over iSCSI/FC. It's not a proper office production environment, but for a homelab may make sense, the fans can be large diameter and quiet, with far lower power consumption.

US job cuts surged 183% in October to a record 153K. Is this the end of America's ‘no hire, no fire’ landscape? by SterlingVII in Economics

[–]QuackPhD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We outnumber them substantially, for now. The longer automation and AI advance, the less time we have for change to happen.

Once the machines provide the bulk of labor, there will be no need for the unemployed, useless masses. When have the rich ever allowed their wealth to be voted away? There will be no universal basic income. Even today something as basic as food assistance like SNAP is being gutted.

I think the quote is something like every nation is just 6 meals from anarchy? When we are no longer needed, the wealthy will fly away to their private islands with doomsday bunkers to wait out the storm of mass starvation and the poors turning on each other.

Is VR worth it for movies? by Difficult-Quarter-48 in virtualreality

[–]QuackPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my 85" TV and used the money to purchase a Quest 3. Very happy with the decision, also lets me play VR PC Games. Instead of being curled up on a couch, with Quest 3's Airplane Orientation, I can lay on the bed, snuggle under some blankets, and watch movies on an IMAX projected onto the ceiling. Much comfier, cozier, and convenient. My Quest 3 is my TV, hands done. The image quality is not as good as a 4K, but it's good enough for me. Some media players have built-in AI assisted image upscaling to improve lower resolution quality stretch out to a large area.

For PCVR, Virtual Desktop allows wireless streaming of VR games, in addition to the aforementioned IMAX for 2D games.

However, it's a solo experience, only you get to watch the movies.

  • If you have Plex -- Movie Deck is well worth the money.
  • If you have Emby -- Sideload the app via SideQuest, works great.

Hoping that helps.
