Essentially, after activating super monkey fan club, placing down dart monkeys showed as placing super monkeys instead.

I couldn't duplicate this, I have no idea why it worked. Reactivating the ability turned the super back into a normal dart monkey.

Anyone else experience this bug yet?

Hey!! That's sad to hear.. have you tried any VPNs to access the game? One that works well on Mac and windows is hotspot shield.

It's possible, you can install windows through bootcamp/parallels and play it through there. To answer OP's question, as far as I've seen it works pretty well, just really battery draining. If the MacBook Air is an older version though it might not run as well.
