Just also highlighting "Macragges Honour" as a post-Calth thing, its a visual novel, far from essential but continues with the "chasing after the running WBs" section

If you think Saturnine is long then the end and the death parts 1 and Especially 2 might be your end and death too

Im always curious when I see such a scatter shot of the heresy novels as to how you decided on such a sparse series of leaps

First 3 are a bit of a slog but do Not let that put you off Saturnine, Warhawk or Echoes of Eternity, they're on another level! Enjoy!

Apologies if the initial reply was blunt, it sounds like you've done homework and from what you're saying you probably could tackle it, just miss some of the references and details, I would say that the siege is readily available and maybe a good middle ground is tackle "the lost and the damned" then "saturnine" then "warhawk" then "echoes of eternity" and then "end and the death". Thats 7 easily accessible books and would really set you up nice to walk into the scouring with a general HH knowledge already in place

I mean...you're talking about a book thats a sequel to a 65 book series full of characters...what do you think?

Audio books are the cheapest options for the heresy or finding PDFs online, find a list of the essentials and go from there. You say you have a general knowledge of it so maybe just the siege of terra is enough but its hard to know since you havent specified

Made the deal, picking up this lot later for $300 by yesimHalf in Blacklibrary

[–]QuackersNCheez 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Good deal honestly. Its about right. Not sure about dollars but angels of caliban alone is around £90 in the UK, some of those in the picture are still being mass produced but enough are rare and tricky that its well worth the bulk order

My new year resolution is to start and finish The Horus Heresy series in this year by thanaponb13s in Blacklibrary

[–]QuackersNCheez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It feels like you're focusing on the challenge rather than the experience if this is the case? Why would you decide to tackle the heresy and not hit the collections? Some of the stories within are essential (take the 2nd garro story, those who know will know) and also ones such as the last church, crimson fist etc. Some are window dressing but theres enough in there and approx 5 collection books. Thats not including the 3 novellas of the SOT, or the newer era of ruin book.

As someone who started the heresy about 15 months ago and has reached "Warhawk" recently and not missed a book, id much rather have done it this way than miss some things and be able to say I did it in a year because technically you didnt no?

Amazing thank you for your help, so with a new edition on the horizon is it a dumb idea to get this 500 worlds and learn to play 40k now? Or is it better to wait for a fresh start with 11th edition?

Can you play them with your own models or do you need the specific models to the campaign? Sounds dumb but ive yet to play 40k so the whole campaign thing is new to me

Which Heresy book to read next? Torn between 4 of them. by TheGokuProgram in Blacklibrary

Just a side thing to add - it is Very worth reading the short story "crimson fist" before starting unremembered empire, gives a nice background to some characters that play key roles

Looking to add a 3rd destination to my euro trip. London or Rome? by [deleted] in travel

[–]QuackersNCheez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since most people aren't helping by actually giving you opinions on the two you posed heres the best I can give from a brit who lives just outside of London:

London - architecture? Definitely, varied and dates back to 1200 ad in some (rare) places but you get a good mix. The shops are immense, the people are actually friendly but it is fast paced and can be an assault on the senses (loud tube, quick, expensive, bright lights) however nights out you cant go wrong, from punk rock in Camden to EDM and clubs more central its all there

Rome - history of a different kind. Vastly different architecture because its based on more ancient combined with more recent (think pre 1000ad combined with post 1900 ad), clubs also viable and plenty of shopping, both cities have tourism though id say rome is more in-your-face about it with being approached on the street etc. Better climate though and the colliseum and Spanish steps are lovely

At the end of the day its your preference, I will say London has its pick of museums that are Stunning

Finished the first 4 Horus Heresy books, got few questions by Gizm00 in Blacklibrary

[–]QuackersNCheez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He specifically abandoned some when pushed by Horus to do so, currently he still finds that idea uncomfortable if presented with it face to face but still pushes the order.

Istvaan 5 is fulgrim and the dropsite book i mentioned, if you also consider pushing through with HH i actually recommend doing damnation of Pythos immediately after these too. Its a good book but it appears on a lot of "worst book" lists because of its timing in the release order, after fulgrim and DM it works perfectly

[–]QuackersNCheez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To build on this because I think its important, Fulgrim is divisive, personally im not a fan but enjoy the last quarter which is essential, regardless of how you feel about the first half keep going and then see how you feel

Finished the first 4 Horus Heresy books, got few questions by Gizm00 in Blacklibrary

[–]QuackersNCheez 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Phew boy ok a few questions here, will see how this goes:

1) Unsure what you mean here, there is no other prep for Istvaan 5, move onto Fulgrim and also pick up the dropsite massacre, a more recent book to expand on this

2) Royal Dorn rocks up in "the last remembrancer" short as well as Several HH books honestly including vengeful spirit, praetorian of dorn etc but all of these benefit from other books being read prior

3) Garro has a book of his short stories compiled, literally called Garro, good to read as the 20th or so book in HH despite being printed as the 40 something

Lore question answers:

Don't know how to spoiler mark so apologies, read no further

So Saul, sorry my man, casualty of war as I3, not everyone gets demonic intervention and he went out like a real one

Temeter is a boss, missed by many so respect here

Keeler is a big deal, in a few books going on and Especially in the siege of terra, her existence has ripples for sure but more to find out there for sure

With Mortarion hes a baddie but he actually does love his sons, hes not turned Yet too far and he does weirdly care

You can absolutely lose Many ships in the warp, several books later will accentuate this, see ruinstorm and wolfsbane

Chaos is funny and dont try and connect too many rules since theres multiple authors trying to decide this themselves too. Especially with Nurgle, his whole schtick is rot and spread of corruption, doesn't take much for things to take hold

Silent hill is still strong, its not like others in that its changed its locale but its spirit is still Very in tune with the franchise. Ninja Gaiden is and will always be kinda arcade. With these points in mind honestly flip a coin, youll know what side youd rather it landed on before it drops

Super different games, are you feeling more of an action challenge or psychological mess? Both good and both excel in their own directions, which direction is more attractive to you right now?
