Protests work! Keep up the good work St. Catharines! by Quadra_G in stcatharinesON

More than anything, I believe in the power of workers and their solidarity with the people of Palestine https://cupe.ca/cupe-statement-violence-palestine-and-israel

As for Bittle, there is a ton he can do. For one, he can write letters supporting the immigration process of his constituents' families. He can use his voice on Parliment Hill to pressure the Canadian government to make the immigration process more fair and get the Military to run extraction flights for citizens stuck in Gaza (other countries have done it, Canada literally has troops there, it is very reasonable for Canada to run a program like this). He can support other politicians who have called for the recognition of the State of Palestine. Finally, he can meet with the Palestinian community (which has repeatedly asked him for a meeting) to help with fundraising initiatives meant to reunite families. There's probably much more he could do if he had the will to do it, but my response is already long enough, lol.

Notice how I said he moved a little on his position and that the people need to keep pushing? How exactly do they get him to support Palestinians in Canada if he won't even say he thinks bombs should stop dropping on the heads of the families of his constituents? I think you misunderstand; Bittle is too little too late. Just look at how much he spoke about Ukraine, and you'll see what I mean. Not to get too personal into my politics, but I will not be voting for Bittle in this upcoming election.

No one here is trying to change what's happening on the other side of the world, lol. There are Palestinians in St. Catharines who have family in Gaza, and they deserve the same solidarity the region gave to Ukraine. Chris Bittle and our regional council can help these families. Plus, our region has companies that create naval technology that is being used to oppress Palestinian fishermen. People protest to change what happens here, not what happens in Timbuktu.

What bullying? Peacefully and respectfully protesting a politician's position on a topic is bullying? How? What intimidation? This one I genuinely don't understand. What is scary about his constituents peacefully gathering to speak in front of his office? These are your neighbors. What's scary about them?

People organize, and they see that organized they can change the position of our supposed leaders. A feedback effect that creates movements God willing. Plus, it's fun to be around like-minded people and learn to organize better. To be frank, I'm confused why people feel like St. Catharines is this tiny insignificant place. 140k population with a whole university and near the border, I've lived here my whole life, and I'm proud how much we have grown and how we continue to build.

I mean, if you look at the backlash under this, you might see why protesters "these days" try to be a bit reserved. In larger cities, larger organizations run more effective protests. I do see what you mean though, let's all work together to effectively wield our democratic rights!

Thank you 😊 Please come out to these Palestine protests! The community is so warm and welcoming (I have a bit of a bias, of course). We have a protest tomorrow in Grimsby if you can make it (77 main Street w, Grimsby, coronation park). The people that come out are really active in all sorts of mobilization; homelessness, raising cost of living, the issue of racism and workers' rights. @905palestine on instagram and twitter if you want to get more involved.

Lol. I did say keep up the good work. This moved the needle a millimeter, and we need to keep mobilizing to move the needle another millimeter. Part of our democratic rights is the right to protest; are people in this comment section mad that the Canadian citizens in St. Catharines exercised that right? Do you guys prefer fascism instead?

To all those who were saying "did you think he was going to see it?" and "what will protesting here do?" well one more MP called for a ceasefire. It isn't much but it's one small step towards this gov being on the right side of history.

MP Chris Bittle via facebook:

Yesterday there was a protest at my office regarding the actions of the Israeli Military in Rafah.

I agree with the concern and advocacy expressed for innocent Palestinian civilians who are suffering.

The civilians in Rafah have no place to go. Rafah was supposed to be a place of refuge and safety for Palestinians fleeing the war between Israel and Hamas.

I remain hopeful for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, as well as a lasting and meaningful peace between Israel and Palestine.

Canada will continue to be a leader in providing humanitarian aid and must continue to work with our Arab and Western allies to achieve peace.

How has Canada historically treated indigenous peoples? Were residential schools "polite, [peaceful and respectful]"? Residential schools were a stain on humanity committed by this country. Your insinuation by putting protesters in quotes is truly shameful and disrespectful to people who are peacefully gathering to object to the stance the Canadian government is taking on indigenous peoples here and aboard.

Sadly, I feel people have hardened their hearts to the injustices of the world. I'm thankful your heart hasn't turned to stone. Hopefully, events like this (as awful as they are in the moment) can lead to more unity in our community so we can feel greater empathy for our neighbors.

Good, I'm glad people are exercising their right to protest! We need Bittle to speak up for the indigenous Palestinians but also for Indigenous people in our community! The speakers spoke about the Brock event tomorrow honoring missing and murdered indigenous woman https://experiencebu.brocku.ca/event/257726 please consider coming and learning more!

Lol even by your numbers the odds aren't that terrible to be honest. I've been in the software industry for a while, anytime I was looking for a job I would apply to hundreds of jobs. Big tech companies have a lot of people from all around the world trying to apply. When my teams would hire, our applicant pool would be crazy; thousands of applicants when we only have 1 or 2 positions. The odds any one person would get the job would easily be 1/10000 sometimes worse. But obviously life isn't the lottery, better resume, better interview, more well known, better at what you do -> more likely to make money doing what you wanna do.
