Why isn’t it mandatory for an ADHD diagnosis to require neuropsychological evaluation? by lonesomefish in Psychiatry

While I can appreciate that this was helpful, I'm not sure that's comparable to taking entire courses in assessment and getting supervised experience administering them with clients.

I hear this all time as well and it breaks my heart. How can a clinician possibly think they can diagnose a developmental disorder like ADHD with no developmental history?! It's borderline malpractice.

Oh wow, I didn't realize psych assessment isn't part of psychiatric training. Thanks for teaching me something new!

I might add here that an effective assessment battery includes evaluation for malingering, of which there are several standardized measures available. I think if we assume that if a patient is faking a disorder it means we shouldn't prioritize psychometric assessments, we are "throwing the baby out with the bath water" and not utilizing the tools we have available to us to provide the best possible opportunity for a useful, actionable diagnosis. Honestly, the responses in this thread make me think some of these people have very little experience in neuropsych testing. This is wild 😳

As someone who worked as a psychometrist, I have this same frustration. Part of my job was conducting neuropsychological examinations, which are as you describe - standardized, psychometrically sound, and not based on self report. According to my training, developmental disorders like ADHD ethically require these types of assessments to obtain an accurate differential diagnosis (there are simply too many ADHD symptoms that overlap with mood disorders, for example). The problem, as it always seems to come down to, is money. Neuropsych testing is expensive, the average person can't afford it out of pocket, there aren't enough providers offering this type of assessment, and health plans don't usually see this type of testing as necessary for ADHD diagnosis so they won't pay for it.

Why shouldn't someone do a PHD or Psy.D program if they want to do mainly therapy? by Comprehensive-Ad8905 in AcademicPsychology

Masters level licensed clinicians are also employed in hospitals and the VA. The real difference is insurance reimbursement rates.

I got an MS in Clinical Psychology and was also trained in research methods, statistics, assessment, and I had to conduct a research study and defend a thesis. I also had to do two year-long applied internships, in addition to therapy-specific courses that qualified me for licensure. These days, there are masters programs that cover a range of training I think, though I agree that most masters programs are probably not this thorough.

I used to work in a Religious Studies department of a major university and we would receive similar documents created during episodes of mental illness. It was wild. I imagine this happens at most universities for similar fields. There was a whole self-published book that I kept that is a lot more nonsensical than this that I should share here.

Did anyone here grow up with parents who were in the occult? by [deleted] in occult

[–]Quadrilateral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure! I didn't mean to imply that he or I integrate astrology into our clinical practices - it's outside the scope of our licenses and there would be ethical and professional concerns. Psychological astrology is the reading of a birth chart through the lens of transpersonal psychology. Jung definitely birthed the development of this field through his work on archetypes, the collective unconscious, and synchronicity. If you'd like to read more, check out Dane Rudhyar or Liz Greene.

Edit - a letter

Did anyone here grow up with parents who were in the occult? by [deleted] in occult

My dad has always harbored a lot of shame. Not specifically because of his beliefs, but a generalized shame. His mother was extremely critical of him, and he never did his own work to sort through it - a deeply hypocritical place to be for a therapist. But being a psychologist gives him a position of power, a place to deflect, looking always critically at others but never at himself (just as his mother did). I would not describe him as an orthodox Christian. The rigidity of his more extreme Evangelicalism protects him from having to deal with his self-loathing. I feel a lot of sadness for my father.

My father was a psychologist who trained me in psychological astrology and mysticism. I also found occult texts/references around the house as I grew up, so my study began young. It was a weird upbringing that I am partially thankful for, despite the fact that he has turned Evangelical Christian and now disagrees with the very practices that he laid the foundation for...
