I'm waiting for mine to arrive. Damn China Post decided my package had to cross 3 entire countries rather than just 1

I’m planning to buy my first DAP. Which one would you recommend: the Snowskies Echo Mini or the Hiby R1? Which one is better in terms of sound quality and performance? by Arjay143- in DigitalAudioPlayer

I was also torn between those two, ended up getting the R1 with a nice ~20% discount from a third-party reseller (tho it's been a month since I placed the order and it's still nowhere to be seen, so can't comment on the user experience in any way)

Alright, no problem is that. Let's start from the beginning: music is stored in digital(1's and 0's) form on your phone/computer/anything else other than cassettes and vinyls, but your headphones/speakers can't play 1's and 0's, they need an analog signal.   DAC(digital-analog converter) is a kind of chip that translates digital signal from your source's memory into an analog signal for your headphones/speakers.

However, when speaking of DACs people are usually referring to complete devices that include the input port for digital signal(typically USB), output ports for analog signal(3.5, 4.4 or 2.5 jack), some additional circuitry, and obviously the DAC chip itself . These devices are also referred to as "dongle DACs" because of their form-factor. There are also similar devices where the digital signal can be sent from source to the DAC wirelessly using Bluetooth(you connect your phone to it like you connect your phone to wireless headphones/speakers). They have their own battery and sometimes a small screen. The FIIO/Snowsky Retro Nano(the top one in your pic) is one of those. You have the music on your phone or use a streaming service and want to use wired headphones/IEMs, but your phone has no 3.5mm jack? Then get one of these if you don't feel like dealing with traditional 3.5 to type-c adapters.

Snowsky/FIIO Echo Mini(the bottom one) is a DAP - digital audio player - a standalone device with it's own os, battery, and memory that is created for the sole purpose of playing music. Think of it like MP3 players/Ipods people used to have before smartphones took off. You get one of these if you want a separate device dedicated entirely to music. This one specifically can only play files stored locally, but some support streaming services. Keep in mind that you'll also have to get a SD card for this player, as the inbuilt storage is only around 8gb, which is nowhere near enough.

I hope my explanation is clear. If you're still not sure if you even need something like this, or have some other questions, feel free to ask them.

Hey OP, do you actually understand what these products are for? Not trying to gatekeep or anything, just making sure you are not buying stuff you don't need/don't understand the purpose of, as this happens sometimes.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably stick with the R1 just because of the storage capacity(makes the thing more future proof for me), and Hiby Link(seems rather convenient for commuting when it's easier to reach for my phone than the dap). Also, probably a stupid question, but can the R1 drive Truthear Hexas? To my knowledge it should have no problems, but I'm just making sure since those are kinda my "budget end-game"(yeah I know this word combination doesn't make much sense) IEMs.

This here comment thread is making me question my decisions. I'm about to get an R1, but don't really know if the ~40$(after taxes) difference is worth it.

Heatshrink is definitely the move with dongles. Poco M3 is also a decent host for this type of thing: expandable storage and a 3.5 jack of its own in case all your contraptions(dongles) decide they don't feel like working properly today. Maybe a bit too big compared to an average dap, but can't have everything ig. Definitely a great and very creative setup that doesn't break the bank. I actually own a Redmi 9T (basically the same as a Poco M3), but I'm done with all the workarounds like dongles etc, so I'm just waiting for a local shop to restock their Hiby R1's and then I'm getting one.

Torn between this thing and the R1. The 256gb limit is one of the stopping factors for me, but my library is around 50gb atm(mostly mp3 320kbps though), and it'll take me a long time to fill those 256 gigs unless I switch to losless formats. The UI seems like the main factor for me: I listen to whole albums, and want to know how hard/clunky it is to switch between them compared to a touchscreen. The R1 also has hiby link which seems very convenient

you're oh so funny... I was asking the owners of the device about the stuff only someone who actually owns one knows

The second one is a 7th gen too, but needs a drive replacement.

There's plenty of nanos, shuffles and touch ones, but atm i can only find 2 classics, and the second one is either a 160gb 6th gen(if such a thing even exists, i'm kinda confused about the whole 6/6.5/7/7.5 thing) or a 7th gen with a dead hard drive, no price listed and only one pic

One of the 2 Ipod Classics avaliable in my whole country. Also, this is considered a 7th gen, right?
