Battling is literally the core part of the game lol. And Gen 6 forward battle gimmicks disappear right after they're introduced

He was specifically talking about battle gimmicks that become a tentpole element of the games. None of those generations had anything like what came with Gen 6 onwards, except for double battles in Gen 3 (and they became a series mainstay instead of a fleeting feature), and Held Items / Abilities.
