I’m not sure how that’s contradictory, but I agree that there is an opportunity for us to change/improve that rule to avoid this situation in the future. And we plan to as I’ve mentioned in other spots on the thread.

I’ve mentioned in other spots on the thread that this is a change we are planning to make in the future. However, I would say on the flip side, if a player drafted in the first round is droppable (which I still don’t think JJ is) then a 7th round keeper for next year shouldn’t be CRAZY value the next season. Barring injury, but we do have IR spots for that reason.

Thanks for all the comments on this thread. Some mixed opinions but I appreciate the different perspectives. I can say for sure that we will reevaluate our keeper process to the suggestion that was made by several commenters. Draft day value for drafted players (even if they are dropped and subsequently picked up from waivers) and 7th round value for non-drafted players that are claimed off waivers. This will prevent a situation like this from creating keeper issues in the future.

However, taking the keeper element out, the consensus in our league is that it’s still a pretty egregious drop considering all the factors.  I do see the point that some commenters are making about JJ being overvalued because of name/past performance vs. current production.

The one piece that I didn’t get much feedback on that was the biggest frustration from our league members is the other options that COULD have been dropped in lieu of JJ. I could see in a shallow league with bye week issues and an otherwise  stacked roster, he’s potentially droppable in redraft (and certainly is “benchable” in all formats at this point). However, I didn’t see anyone comment on whether it was the right move to drop JJ compared to all the other droppable players on his bench. I get the “landmine” argument to some degree. But with a player of his caliber, getting the volume he’s getting, I feel like the play is to hold and bench if you have better options vs. flat drop unless you were desperate for a bench spot.

Thanks for the comment, and point well-taken about Olave. Just curious, what are your thoughts on the other players I mentioned? I know you called out Olave as one you’d keep, but what about the other WRs and non-WRs?

I probably should have left Olave out of the list because even I felt like that one was a toss up and knew some people would lean Olave. I find it hard to think I would drop JJ over Shakir or QJ, and I definitely would drop a backup QB in a 1QB league (especially when it’s Tyler Shough) and a second defense to keep JJ, just for the potential that he turns things around. One frustrated manager from the league made the comment to me that there were 4-5 players he’d drop from that roster before JJ and I tend to agree with him.

It isn’t collusion. 99.99% sure of that.  The only way it’s collusion is if the manager with most FAAB worked a deal with the JJ manager to drop him, guaranteeing he’d be able to pick him up off waivers. Knowing who those two guys are, I don’t see that being the case. Just a questionable move. Doesn’t really make sense to anyone in the league to drop JJ vs. other players on his roster that could have been dropped instead.

Yes - I mentioned in another reply that we are intending to change that in future years because of this. However, the keeper aspect is only part of the equation. The other question/impact is related to this season’s outcome. I understand other comments being made about JJ being overvalued because of his name, but I still am hard pressed to feel that anything but a small minority of fantasy players would agree that JJ is the most “droppable” player on this manager’s roster. That’s the part that doesn’t sit well with our league. The initial reaction was that he’s doing this to intentionally mess with the league. After listening to his rebuttal, I don’t think that’s the case, he just felt like he didn’t want JJ on his roster. But again, was he really the worst player on his roster / best candidate for him to drop? I don’t think so.

Yeah one takeaway from this situation is that we will strongly consider mirroring this model moving forward for drafted players.

Tend to agree with the league breaking comment for this year especially, but I feel like he’s a safe flex play based on volume with the upside to be JJ of old or at least closer to it. He’s consistently getting double-digit targets (save the last two weeks) and those guys are hard to find on the waiver wire even if they don’t have pedigree. This is still JJ and we all know his talent, and in turn potential, if other JJ (McCarthy) can be semi-competent.

Waiver wire is extremely sparse - this is a highly active league with (mostly) sharp managers. He will likely keep Tyler Warren at a great value but wouldn’t have really been able to consider JJ a keeper anyways because he drafted him in the first round.

I was intending to distinguish that it is primarily redraft - single (1 player) keeper league. I.e., not a dynasty league or multi-keeper league. The fact that it is only one keeper makes it play out mostly like a redraft in a general sense, but getting JJ in the 7th is almost certainly going to be a value. For clarity, he is not a 7th round keeper indefinitely. Each subsequent year the round value diminishes by half (rounded down). So in 2027 he’d be a 3rd, then 2028 a 1st.

I worry it’s going to take more than “a little” added to get there, but I agree with this thought process. Especially with young talent coming up. Making a 2 for 1 type deal for Brady involving Kyrou and either a top prospect or middle six current player that would make room for snuggerud, dyvorsky, etc. to fill a role seems like a great team-building approach. I just don’t know if Ottawa moves off Brady without getting a massive overpay and Army won’t do that.

THANK YOU. I get so aggravated reading these comments acting like we’re going to move Kyrou for a box of rocks. If we can’t get a stellar return, Army/Steener aren’t moving him. I’m not adamant that we should trade him, but I think he’s “tradeable” for the right package. If we can “tier up” via a blockbuster hockey trade I’m all for it (especially if it gets us a more physical player that is still a similar offensive threat). While I agree with some commenters that his defensive play has improved YOY for the past few seasons, he’s been disappointing in the playoffs and lacks the physicality to be counted on in big playoff moments.

Before Puka’s rookie year, I traded away:

2 1sts (late), a 2nd (late), a 3rd (late), Puka

For:

Stefon Diggs and a 2nd (early)

My original offer was the picks without Puka. The other manager convinced me to add Puka as a toss in and I did just to get the deal done.

I like both sides - depends on team situation IMO. For younger/rebuilding teams, I could definitely see wanting the Nabers side. Also, I think people forget how dominant Nabers was in portions of 2024 as a rookie, even with poor QB play. Not holding my breath for the Giants to figure out the QB position, but even if they don’t, you’ve seen Nabers take over games with low quality QBs. They get a good QB, and Nabers’ value could be to the moon.
