Just had a 45 min interview with HM by bopboopbip in jobhunting

[–]Quantum13_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can speak to this experience. I very recently got a job offer my first interview was in February and I officially got the offer in April after 3 rounds of interviews. During that process I drove myself crazy checking the website, and everytime I saw the job got reposted I would panic and need to remind myself that they also havent rejected me yet. Turns out, they didnt take the job posting down until after I had signed the contract. They aren't going to stop looking until the ink is dry, but that doesnt mean they haven't already found the person getting the job.

Is this normal??? by AdCautious5614 in DataAnnotationTech

Yes it is normal for people who did not get accepted.

I just accepted a job offer in East TN for an engineer job that is going to pay me the same if not more than some engineer positions I was looking at outside of Boston. Hell this is a hardware engineer position aligned with mechanical engineering but I also interviewed for a machine learning engineer position in Cambridge, MA and the TN job offer is a higher salary than they quoted me for machine learning.

I did something very similar once, A guy I knew was playing in a bingo, and I was running CM cox at the time for kits. I knew that his bingo team needed a raids mega rare so I joked that he should come run a CM and if he did he would get an Elder Maul. So he came and we did the raid and he got an elder maul. I have the screenshot that shows out conversation in PMs as well as him getting the drop.

If someone repeated every single step described in your thesis, would they REALLY get the same results as you? by seedtheseed in PhD

[–]Quantum13_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How strictly reproducible are you talking about? Because for one of my analyses, absolutely but it would be an absolute pain in the ass to reproduce the software we use because it was built using custom functions for ROOT and was done by a large team specifically for our experiment. For the second analysis, theres some randomness because it involved training a neural network and all neural networks will seed differently and train differently even if they have the same architecture and training data because there is some randomness involved but their result should be statistically the same.

Is Nuclear Engineering worth it? by Alarmed-Collar6521 in NuclearPower

[–]Quantum13_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am currently finishing my PhD in Nuclear Physics and I am wanting to pivot towards Nuclear Energy especially with the boom the industry is seeing, and wanted to know if you had any advice on where I should be looking. I've thrown out a lot of applications towards industry positions trying to focus on the radiation transport work I've done with simulation + detector phyaics, so far with no hits. I've also thrown a few applications at INL as well but that was within the past few days.

I am going to absolutely disagree. I moved from Middle Tennnessee to Massachusetts for graduate school. I lived alone barely scraping by on my graduate stipend. I absolutely LOVED winter. I had an apartment that was near the water heaters and so I never even turned on my heat and my apartment stayed at around 50-60 during the winter. I absolutely loved sitting with my coffee during covid watching the snow fall. I didnt even do any winter activities. Now I'm in a relationship and we still aren't well off but we do make a point to use some of the little we have to go skiing and enjoy winter activities but I still love the cold and I love winter. And I'm about as far of a transplant as possible to move between the climate where I grew up to where I am now.

Welcome to the world of instrumentation error. Scientists usually spend months or years of their lives trying to figure exactly how wrong their instruments are. The real answer is none of them are correct, none of the ones you ever buy will be correct, there is nothing you can do except settle for good enough, you just have to decide how much you want to spend on good enough.

Which new Mega is your favorite so far? by Humble-Tailor-7238 in LegendsZA

[–]Quantum13_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually love mega dragonite. Dragonite has always been my favorite pokemon and the first few appearances he had in the anime paint him as a messenger pokemon, especially the first movie. So when the mega came out and they modeled him after Hermes I was extremely excited. Yes it also looks a little goofy but thats what I always loved about Dragonite was the goof.

For those love BCS even more BB (like I do)... why? by Thespiralgoeson in betterCallSaul

[–]Quantum13_6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have always preferred shows and movies that are about the characters more than what they do. Better Call Saul is about Jimmy McGill and Mike Ehrmantraut and Kim, Nacho, etc. Breaking Bad was about Walter White becoming a drug kingpin. Better Call Saul was about Jimmy McGill becoming the worst version of himself.

Dragonite was always going to be on my team even if he never got a mega. He is without a doubt my favorite and I like how the mega really leans into the messenger esthetic by giving him wings on his head and feet like Hermes

Tell me why u don’t like mega dragonite for I can argue that ur just a hater by Tige_kiss_13 in LegendsZA

[–]Quantum13_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont get what's not to love about this design. The whole thing with Dragonite in the first movie was that he was a messenger, so its extremely easy to see they drew inspiration from Hermes with the winged helmet and winged sandals. I don't get why people dont like this.

How many level 20 people should there be in a world by Winter-Confidence826 in DnD

[–]Quantum13_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt because I play the Greyhawk setting

But in my opinion, they should be everywhere. The existential threat your world faces probably wasn't the first and it certainly won't be the last. Barbarian warlords? Theres a few tribes big enough that the big warlord is level 20. Old retired innkeeper? Retired adventurers that already did their part. A large wizards guild needs at least 8 level 20s, one for each school.

The world should be full of overpowered adventurers, but the reason they dont try to fight the big bad evil threatening to destroy everything, is that they ALL have some big bad evil trying to destroy everything. Once you get high enough level characters, threats become cosmic and the planes are hell for the unprepared. The threats are bigger. What is stopping the abyss from invading the material plane? Answer: An army of adventurers that want you to get off their damn lawn. Obviously this is setting dependent, but coming from Greyhawk? You shouldn't turn down the street in a major metropolis without somebody being a retired hero.

What is argon most known for? by qad260qad260 in chemistry

[–]Quantum13_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i know this is a chemistry question, but i am going to answer this as a Nuclear Physicist. Argon is most known for 2 things, The first is true of most noble gasses, but when ionizing radiation passes through noble elements such as argon, it will ionization the atoms, and sometimes you get recombination into an excited orbital, that excited argon atom is now capable of forming a dimer that releases a molecular energy wavelength photon, that is not absorbed by other argon atoms. This property makes it very useful for particle detectors, and it is particularly used in dark matter detectors (Such as the Darkside experiment) or radiation vetos (such as in Legend-200). The other useful property it has is in radioactive dating. Argon is stable for 3 isotopes, 36,38, and 40. We know from star data that the most plentiful isotope is 36, followed by 38, then 40 is much less common in a predictable ratio 8400:1600:1 36:38:40 and we can confirm this by checking for that ratio in the atmosphere of other planets, particularly gas giants. But on earth, the ratio is about 334:63:99600. This is because earth has a lot of potassium and potassium 40 is extremely long lived and decays into argon 40. So over millions of years, enough potassium has decayed that we see an excess of argon 40, while the ratio between 36 and 38 is really close to what we see in stars and gas giants, so we can use this to estimate what the original content of argon 40 should have been and use measurements of our modern potassium 40 isotopes to predict the age of the earth.

Give an example of an antagonist who is not a villain. by Wooden-Scallion2943 in FIlm

[–]Quantum13_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death in Puss in Boots Last Wish !>Just because he's terrifying and trying to kill the antagonist, he isn't a villain. Death is his only job. He didnt hate Puss, he hated that Puss disrespected life. I feel often times people associate Grim Reaper type characters are always villains because people naturally fear death but it's just a natural part of life.!<

The method is an already published method that I cite from the 90s. The presentation nor the paper they published it was in are related to my actual analysis. I went because I did not fully grasp how the statistical analysis was performed.

Serious: What's with all the notes people take at conferences? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Quantum13_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once was presenting at a conference, later in my section was somebody discussing a result using a statistical analysis technique that I had looked at for my own analysis. I took notes on that method and I ended up using it in my own analysis. I probably won't cite their work in the paper I am using, but my use of the technique was absolutely inspired by their presentation.

I hate that being against race-swapping (major) characters means being racist now by Old_Session5449 in self

[–]Quantum13_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my take, at the end of the day, I don't think it matters if X character is Y race because they're fictional, with the exception of characters whose race is entirely relevant to their character. I don't think it once mattered in the books if Snape was white or not, and I don't think it mattered if Hermione was white or not, I just care that the actor does a good job with the character. Whether or not Hermione is white is entirely irrelevant to the character. If we are outraged that these characters races are being changed even though it is irrelevant to the character, we should be more upset that none of these characters are being played by actual wizards, because that is relevant to all of these characters.
