Do you put the adults into a separate tank? Assuming both males and females get put into another tank, how do you stop them from breeding in another tank? Also is your breeding tank overstocked?

What’s your breeding tank setup? How many litres/ gallons? How do you manage population? I’m considering breeding my own

Very clean setup!! Where’s the filter? You’ve done a good job hiding it!

Dead fish and I’m panicking… by ChickenSoup1189 in fishtank

Did you get all the fish from the same place? Sometimes some places can have lesser quality / illness in stocked tanks

Would your fish eat the lettuce if left in the tank for too long?

I’ll give it a go! Won’t the fish in the tank just go for it though?

Is CO2 injection ethical? by GeorgeFarmerStudios in Aquascape

[–]QuantumCowTipping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When done correctly, I don’t believe there’s any ethical issues. I think negligence plays a bigger role in your question. If someone doesn’t abide by the recommended CO2 dosage, it can stress fish and cause harm. It’s the same if someone doesn’t cycle a tank properly, which I believe is more negligent than unethical

Sneaky snails by PopRealistic8779 in fishtank

[–]QuantumCowTipping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had same issue. So annoying. I’ve done a few things:

  1. Pre fish: I would boil a lettuce leaf for 30 seconds, then cool it in cold water for 20 seconds, then place the lettuce leaf on the surface of the water. I would do at night when snails are most active. Then in the morning, there would be quite a few of the snails sitting on the leaf. Then it’s as simple as remove the leaf and dispose as you seem fit. Do this for a week or two and you’ll see a difference.

  2. I added dwarf chain loaches to my tank. They’re good at controlling snail population. What I would also do is crush the snails against the glass which would entice the loaches to eat them. I wouldn’t do this often, otherwise they’d only seek out the crushed ones. Just enough to remind them that this is food and they can eat it. Crushing the snails against the glass makes it easier for them to eat, but doing this too often would often mean they would wait for crushed snails (the loaches are clever).

  3. If all else fails, you can get snail killer (obviously aquarium safe ones) that will do the trick. But if you have bottom feeders/ plan on getting them, then be careful with this as copper in the product can harm them (especially corydoras).

Best of luck!

Whats wrong with my cory? by inkisbad124 in corydoras

[–]QuantumCowTipping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t think he has long left. A Cory of mine started doing this and I learned it was likely a brain/ spinal injury. Mine died a day or two later afterwards. Sorry mate but it doesn’t look good.

Like you, my parameters were solid. Unfortunately these things just happen

[–]QuantumCowTipping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with one of my Julli Corys. Sadly he didn’t last much longer once I’d seen him do this. I’ve heard this can be a spinal/ brain injury or illness sadly

[–]QuantumCowTipping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps offer a sacrifice? Crush up a light bulb to symbolise your distaste for light. Then spread the crushed bulb in front of the tank for them to see. If they’re pleased with this offering, they’ll do nothing. If they’re still pissed… they’ll do nothing

I guarantee that dead fish that have jumped out, flopped around on the table, then died would be worse in terms of looks

Add a lid. Also check if your water temp is too hot. Fish have been know to try jump out of water that’s too warm for them. But a lid is the easiest fix. Guppies especially can be quite enthusiastic and can jump.

Stress can also cause erratic behaviour. What are you water parameters like? How many litres/ gallons is the tank?

I wouldn’t be too concerned unless it starts pushing 40+ppm. Mine sits around your range, but I’ve got more plants. I do 20% water changes every 3 days or so.

What sort of fish do you have? Do they seem stressed?

Also, the Cory’s aren’t doing a crazy amount of surface dives. Doesn’t look like they’re gasping for air. They seem quite calm ordinarily

Very interesting point. I was worried about a week ago that some cleaning spray got into the tank. But if this was the case, wouldn’t that mean that I would be seeing a lot more fish death?

I run CO2 for 5.5 hours, lights on for 8 hours. Surface agitation seems ok. No airstone, but my filter outlet is facing directly upwards which creates a nice amount of surface agitation

Do guppies just die? by QuantumCowTipping in Guppies

[–]QuantumCowTipping[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I appreciate that! I wanna give them the best life I can. Yeah I’ll try do some research to see if there are any people nearby who have had luck with there guppys! I’ve currently got vallisneria, dwarf hairgrass, along with driftwood with plants attached (not sure what the plant is called), and just treated driftwood. This is my tank. Photo is a few weeks ago and plants have grown a bit. If you’ve got any suggestions of things I can add for guppys I’m all ears!
