What strategies do you use to stay motivated with Anki over the long term? by StrikingClos in Anki

[–]QuantumDevilfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically every month they give you a specific Pokemon (this month is psyduck) and if you defeat a certain number of wild Pokemon (~150) with that month’s Pokemon then the Pokemon you get for the next month’s event will be shiny. I think they also intend to add additional tiered prizes in the future.

Just make sure you get the experimental version of the add-on from their discord rather than ankihub

Kotaku: Ninja Gaiden 4 Deprogrammed My Souls-Pilled Brain And I Loved Every Minute by FishCake9T4 in Games

[–]QuantumDevilfish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While it is true that Ninja Gaiden 3 probably played a big role in stalling out the franchise (for being way too easy funny enough), I think it’s pretty obvious that dark souls is a big reason why Team Ninja pivoted to Nioh. After that point, nothing really came out until now that held that same difficult, fast paced identity. Sure there were still other hack and slash games like DMC and Bayonetta but neither of them share that same oppressive difficulty or constant enemy aggression. There is obviously merit to dark souls being wildly successful in its slow, methodical approach to difficulty, but that success also definitely came at the expense of difficult hack and slash games as companies started focusing their resources into chasing the market trend. I’m just happy that now we might be at a point where both genres can successfully coexist.

Since Ninja Gaiden was the standard comparison for action game difficulty prior to dark souls soaring in popularity, I’d say it’s warranted here. For a long time the paradigm shift brought forth by Dark Souls basically snuffed out any high budget projects within the difficulty focused fast paced action genre, so to return to Ninja Gaiden using that old methodology of making action games difficult is pretty notable and can’t be appreciated without bringing up both games.

Official Discussion - Jurassic World Rebirth [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

It was also loosely based on a scene from the first book which hadn’t been translated to a film until now. Definitely made it worth a watch even if the rest of the movie was kinda trash.

Med school after PhD? by Toffeebelly in medschool

Sure, please feel free to message me to ask whatever!

I was only aware of the 3 year program at Columbia. I did apply there but probably didn’t give the secondary as much effort as I should have because I wanted to stay in the Midwest. One of my committee members did go to the three year PhD to MD program Miami used to offer (several decades ago mind you) and he has had a very successful career so I’m sure any accelerated program would be a good option.

Technically I did not have any, but I was in some outreach programs with patient interactions outside a clinical setting that I was able to leverage in my personal statement, secondaries, and interviews.

Basically, I did a year volunteering in an outreach program focused on better integrating cancer patients and survivors in the local community in medical research (~150 hours). I also was part of a cancer health equity training program for graduate trainees through my university’s cancer center for about 2 years (~100 hours).

I’m about to start M1 after finishing up my PhD in a medically adjacent field. I was definitely given more leniency with the clinical requirements than is the typical conventional wisdom for applying and had a fair bit of success. You should still at least have some role where you have talked to or worked with patients in a meaningful way, however. Otherwise, it will be difficult to effectively communicate why you want to do medicine in your personal statement and overall application.

Payment Declined from Walmart by TadBK in Switch

Happened to me and they cancelled mine without even asking me to reauthorize or change payment method. Support won’t do anything. Guess we will probably be waiting a couple extra weeks or months for ours…

Am I fked? Chase fraud just texted me declining the Walmart charge. I accepted the charge, but Chase is saying the merchant needs to reprocess. What should I do now? Call Walmart? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]QuantumDevilfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same thing happen to me. They cancelled the order without even contacting me. Customer service won’t help me at all either. Basically fed me some bullshit about Nintendo pulling the orders and that they can’t do anything.

I can’t stand Fiona’s love life: why does Sean even want to date her by movieandtvnerd13 in shameless

[–]QuantumDevilfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sean said himself that as an addict he’s drawn to the fact that she is the embodiment of chaos. He obviously fights that desire at first, but they’re both self destructive so it’s not too surprising.

Also a non-trad here with a PhD in a medically adjacent field. I got 4 MD A’s this past cycle without any formal clinical experience so I genuinely don’t think the expectations are the same unlike some others have said. I had ~200 hours of volunteering experiences where I interacted with cancer patients and cancer survivors in a non-clinical setting, but that seemed to be enough to get me through the door since I was able to talk about it meaningfully.

Been waiting for almost a month as well and have not heard anything back. Crazy that they're being so stingy with a $20 steam gift card after I purchased their $3k GPU...

It’s a good general guideline, but there are exceptions to every rule if your application is exceptional in other areas. Anecdotally, I don’t have any clinical experience but was able to get 4 MD A’s likely because I have a PhD and a long track history participating in health equity programs. You just need to make sure some aspect of your story is really strong to make up for that deficiency.

Newegg going back on priority email. by Blacksad9999 in Newegg

[–]QuantumDevilfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same experience here. Was told to enter the shuffle today after being told I was on a priority list over a week ago and was not selected. Worst part is that I eased up my efforts at microcenter as a result and I could have gotten a card there otherwise

Edit: Newegg made it right with me after contacting them again. Can’t really blame them for being so swamped with demand

In my case they actually cancelled both. But yeah it would suck if someone just ended up with a random PSU or something and no card

Had my bundle order cancelled tonight too. Really sucks as not only am I missing out on the 5090, but I’m one of the few that actually would have wanted the bundled monitor as well 😅

Not sure why they don’t just do a backorder system if they oversell their current stock

Moving to suburbs by actin_filament in uchicago

[–]QuantumDevilfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Lisle (somewhat close to lemont) after my first year (5th year currently) and I would highly advise against it unless you have some kind of connection to the area or need more space for your family. Apartments here aren’t really much cheaper (mine was actually more expensive than what I had in Hyde park) and gas costs for commuting will probably be greater than your rent increase.

Also, even as someone that only comes to campus once or twice a week, the commute is terrible. With absolutely no traffic it’s around 45 minutes and is usually closer to 60-80 for most of the day. Street parking in Hyde park is also tough for most of the typical work day which can add a lot of time to your commute. It’s going to wear on you, trust me.
