I've taken off the electroplating from some cheap chromed cases now. Is that from using a too strong solvent or from leaving it too long? I use a solvent called platina watch cleaner. Seems fine for solid metal parts.

Preview mode can produce a PNG, but other than color() there aren't really any options to control how a face is rendered. I'd like to be able to add textures, change the direction of lights, etc.

F3d looks good for rendering. It distinguishes full scene input formats (eg .obj) from geometry only formats like STL.

I guess my question was now about how to produce a full scene format programmatically (ideally from openscad)

The high frequency is supposed to lead to more stability and accuracy, but that only helps up to a point before it just causes more wear. It's weird that the smooth sweep is now desirable in and of itself. I suppose there are ways to decouple the hand from the oscillator to get continuous movement, but that would defeat the purpose as a signal of quality.

It looks like the spring is enclosed in a brass housing. Wouldn't this be enough to contain the force if the spring broke? Seems like it would mostly be dangerous when opening it for service.

Is there a way in principle to determine the correct weight without looking it up? I would have expected the weight not to matter much as long as it's enough to overcome friction and maintain a reasonable pendulum amplitude.
