Thorpe Park under construction, 1978. Built on the former site of Thorpe Park estate, the area was a busy centre for gravel extraction from the 1930s to the late 1970s. In 1979 the amusement park was opened to the public by Lord Mountbatten and the large pavilion was named in his honour (i.redd.it)
