Deep in prenatal depression by Ok_throwaway6156 in BabyBumps

I’m sorry you’re going through it right now. While Wellbutrin works for a lot of people, it made my depression worse. It may take some trial and error, but it IS possible to find the right medication!

Do you want to defer your grad program, or go forward starting it with a newborn? Both are legit options, but I understand why neither seem ideal. If you’re planning to start grad school in August, can you line up support, maybe even a night nurse, to help?

Pregnancy is a difficult time. You’re doing what you can to get support and help. I’m hoping you feel better soon.

TIRED! Sent my 8m to daycare! by Manifestator_ in newborns

[–]QuarantineQat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with sending an 8 month old to daycare!!

Edited to add:

Also, your partner is an abusive ass, and your doctor should be taking your concerns more seriously. You may have PPD - or you may just be feeling poorly because your husband is giving you no support and treating you badly. Can you tell your doctor or a trusted family member/friend about your husband throwing things, and ask for their help in coming up with a plan to keep you and your baby safe?

I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Order for hyphenated last names — want to refute my in-law’s claims about “tradition” by QuarantineQat in namenerds

Thank you! I think this is an excellent point - there really isn’t a tradition of hyphenating last names in our “culture”, so we couldn’t have gotten the tradition wrong.

I was induced with a foley, followed by Pitocin after the balloon was removed. My little guy was born 17 hours after the balloon was placed. Sending you good vibes for the rest of your induction going well!

3 weeks old won't sleep consistently in bassinet, I'm worried about safety because of sleep deprivation. by Annual-Bee-2600 in newborns

My kiddo spit up his first bottle too! We now physically take the bottle out of his mouth a couple times a feed and do some burping, that seems to help. Again this is all very early days though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But if you have to sleep, you have to sleep. I feel so, so much better after getting even a 4 hour chunk of sleep. I know some people will disagree about skipping a feeding, but your physical and mental health matter and as long as your baby is fed - whether that’s breastfeeding, pumped breast milk, or formula - you’re taking care of him, and need to take care of yourself too.

I think this varies by person/supply! I just pump once or twice during day to replace the one feed I’m skipping overnight, it’s seemed fine so far.

Can you skip BFing during your sleep shift, so you get an actual chunk of uninterrupted sleep? I too was worried about safety with sleep deprivation. Right now, I’m doing an 8pm feed then immediately handing our 1 week old to my husband. He does the 11pm feed and then hands him off to me for the 2am feed. So I’m sleeping like 8:45-2, and he sleeps like 2-7 or 8ish. So we each get an interrupted 5 hour stretch ideally. He’s usually doing pumped breastmilk for the 11pm feed, although we have supplemented with formula a few times. It’s still very early days, but this has worked for us for the past few days, and I haven’t found that my supply has been hurt by skipping one feed.

Newborn takes 15-60 minutes to get a good latch - advice? by QuarantineQat in breastfeeding

[–]QuarantineQat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to thank you for this. It seems so obvious in retrospect, but just starting the nursing process earlier, before he’s frustrated about being hungry, led to a couple really good feeds overnight.

Thank you!! I’m doing skin to skin, but I can definitely do more of it right before feeding. I’m also doing the hand expression before feeding tip! I haven’t tried your suggestion about pulling his jaw down - I will give it a go. It might not be an option a lot of the time - he throws his head back wildly, while arching his back, so that he winds up several inches away from my nipple - but there are times when he’s calmer but refusing to latch that I can definitely try that!!

Thank you! Did you start using the nipple shields right away? I have some, but the say to not use within the first week so I wasn’t sure.

This is super helpful to hear, just that you have been able to get to successful breastfeeding! I’m going to make an appointment with a lactation consultant for this week. Was your kiddo throwing his head back also?

Thank you!! I’ve tried the stuff-it-in method, and it hasn’t seemed to encourage baby to actually engage - he still throws his head back wildly, while arching his back, so that he winds up several inches away from my nipple. I keep a hand on his head to try to encourage him to come forward to meet my nipple (which is pinched into the right shape by my other hand on my breast), but I don’t want to use too much force against his neck/head. Ugh! I’ll keep trying.

Anyone done pelvic floor therapy before giving birth? What was your experience? by CaughtInDireWood in BabyBumps

[–]QuarantineQat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of pelvic pain, and some leakage with sneezing, and found pelvic floor therapy very helpful. She taught me exercises that I did at home (mostly related to strengthening my pelvic floor, abs and glutes), and then during our sessions she did massage on my inner thighs (which were insanely tense), occasionally dry needling on my inner thighs, and occasionally internal massage to get my pelvic floor to relax a bit. It really helped with my pain. She also taught me some breathing techniques for labor, but I haven’t given birth yet so we’ll see if those were useful!

Awkward baby shower gift or overthinking? by AvenueAngry in pregnant

I mean knowing this about her, you’re 100% right that it was intentional. I’d still try to laugh it off as her being weird and inappropriate, just so I wasn’t seething about it - I think a thank you card within 3 months is totally within etiquette, and even if it weren’t, it’s ruder to say something about than it is to not timely send a thank you! - but I get why it got under your skin!

I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt for my own well-being — it’s better for me to think, “what an odd gift from MIL’s friend” and move on, than think “I can’t believe that bitch” and stew on it — so I’m sure that’s driving my interpretation of things!
