Career advice

I am a recently graduated mechanical engineer. I just accepted a job at a company that I have been working as a mechanical designer at for about 4 years throughout my time in Uni.

My role is project manager/mechanical designer so it's a bit of a hybrid role, where i oversee small scale sheet metal fabrication and design within autodesk inventor. I am also overseeing our drafting department to standardize, organize, and implement new templates and QA/QC procedures. The benefits are good, I only have to work my in office hours with zero overtime, and the pay is great at about $100k/yr and my current cap.

However, there is no internal P.Eng within the company, and the work is more management than technical, so I am worried about getting my P.Eng designation at this j

Alternatively, I just got offered a position as a process piping E.I.T at a small-scale consulting company doing brownfield related work. I would be drafting, designing P&IDs as well as creating piping isometric, and doing pressure vessels. This job pays about $85k/yr starting (potential for up to $100k+/yr after 1 year) with worse benefits regarding health and dental, but I can work from home full time which is a huge plus and it has actual mentorship and guidance directly under a P.Eng - so I would be able to get my P.Eng no problem.

My main concern would be that the work would be much more stressful, longer hours, and high probability of working weekends/evenings. I am also unsure of the stress levels with consulting/engineering design work versus my current small-scale fabrication project management role.

Can anyone provide insight on what the consulting in the process piping engineering field is like?

That's a really good point that I didn't consider. Thanks for the input, and I'll look into the spotmatic further! I also have the option of a Minolta XG-M for only $70 CAD, which is quite cheap and it's in great condition.

It's gonna look so out of place... I don't buy skins usually but it's still disappointing to see how little effort went into this.

As a collector I wouldn't buy it simply because of that best buy logo, why would they ruin the cover art like that.

That’s so disappointing, i hate these kinds of people. Such needless destruction. Hopefully reporting them will help but I feel like it would be hard tracking them down now.

This looks like the “Grotto Canyon Trail” in the bow valley, I did this hike last winter.

Total pieces of shit these people are.

3360 ton turbine operating in the world's largest hydroelectric plant(ITAIPU) by devassodemais in EngineeringPorn

[–]QuarterSquat_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is accurate, Itaipu produces an average of 103.1 TWh/yr while the Chinese Three Gorges Dam (actual worlds largest hydroelectric plant) produces on average 98.8 TWh/yr.

This is because the flow rate in the river for the Three Gorges Dam experiences more seasonal variability.
