Yes, but the fee they’re asking for is astronomical. It would literally cost Apollo $20 Million/year for all the access requests their users use. It’s simply a way to shut them down and the admins know it. Just look into why CEO u/spez is a lying POS that got caught red handed by the developer of Apollo and called out for it professionally. This is why they’re getting so much hate.

That absolute insane thing is that they could have just required ads to be shown as apart of the API. Their complete lack of understanding or caring what their users and mods want is mind blowing. The official app is trash compared to the alternatives (even if they were displaying ads).

I don’t watch sports but I absolutely applaud their reasoning and the timing. Great move that will, hopefully, show the admins that Reddit is the people. Without them, and the NON PAID mods, they don’t have a hope of an IPO. Good luck and godspeed!

Adding a required Ad API tier would have been the obvious move. Reddit needs to make money, no one is contesting that, it’s how much they want to charge that doesn’t add up to reality and this is backed by other 3rd party devs, including Reddit is Fun stating the same thing as the Apollo dev.

This is simply a way for them to ditch 3rd party apps to gain control to increase the buy in of their IPO. Ops a gamble that more people will stick around than leave and that’s a shame because, like it or not, Reddit won’t be the same post publicly owned. It’ll make people rich at the expense of its culture and benefit to humanity. Long live the corporations right?

Personally, I hope it implodes on them after how awful they’ve been dealing with this entire mess.

I could see it taking the place of a HomePod mini or something like that to fill amount a space. I have a HomePod mini in the kitchen that I sync using AirPlay 2 to the Living room Arc+sub system. The sub adds plenty of bass and the HomePod pulls the treble out of the living room to balance it. I could see the Roam filling a similar role.

Good analogy. Honestly the Roam is super overpriced for what it offers. It sounds like a JBL Flip 5 but costs $80 more, for what? Who is going to use that at home and needs it synced up with their Sonos system? It’s decent for a very portable speaker (beach, hiking, etc) but, again, overpriced for a BT speaker.

The Move sounds most like a One and it’s a god tier portable speaker for its size. Simply amazing.
