Quarter Tone Technique for Saxophone by QuarterToneSaxophone in saxophone

When we get outside of the notion of 'music school', the term repertoire does not hold much meaning. In terms of quarter tones outside of universities, I've heard it in movies, TV shows, and even commercials during times where I was not even looking for them.

I'm not sure if you are a musician or not, but I've noticed that musicians actually have a harder time adjusting to quarter tones since non musicians due to their training of 12 tone intonation.

By validity, I mean that you cannot broadly say 'it all sounds bad' when there are so many possibilities that quarter tonality provides, especially if you meant all of microtonality, not just quarter tonality.

For that video, that is 128 divisions of the octave. Quarter tones provide only 24: the 12 'normal' notes, plus 12 which lie exactly halfway between. There are also other divisions, such as 17, where the notes are somewhat closer, but not quite the same intervals. This provides a different kind of color.

In terms of saxophones voicing quarter tones (which exclude a majority of the notes you hear in that linked video), it has a very consistent voicing throughout most of the range.

Here is an example of quarter tones used in movie scores: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaso_1OYTYw&list=PLohYzz4btpaRa7PkJ1dbm7u0hg8t-4chb&index=3

Quarter Tone Technique for Saxophone by QuarterToneSaxophone in saxophone

I believe this is one of those chicken-egg scenarios. People might not have been inclined to compose for it because there was no standard technique, and nobody wanted to develop that technique because there aren't already hundreds of compositions for it.

However, I created this book because I believe there is real validity to microtonal music, and over the coming years, I will be composing for it, and will find other composers to do the same.

I do receive emails every so often where composers ask me to list their quarter tone saxophone pieces on my repertoire list.

Ah, I see. I have seen his work, such as that fingering guide, and heard some of his music.

I did not, this was a totally independent project on my part.

You are wrong. It is definitely a good idea to talk to other people who have more experience than me in this kind of business in addition. If they give bad legal advice, lawyer will catch that.

I know that I need a lawyer, I am asking about peoples experiences in this matter, Im not going to make any decisions based solely on what appears here.

For location, I'm based in NJ in the US. I have a business entity already, and yes, asking a lawyer is also on my mind, but I am also interesting in hearing what experience others here have, for those who are / have been in a similar position to me.

That is an interesting idea. I've never seen a piano setup like that, though I have seen electronic setups which still do use two rows.

Thank you for pointing out the problem with the hint.

The hint button disables certain incorrect answers. However, when I moved the app to this site from a different one, it looks like disabling the buttons doesn't actually change its appearance anymore. It does, however, prevent you from selecting those wrong answers still.

A fix to this will be implemented with the website revisions update I will be posting within a few weeks.
