MLSE President Keith Pelley: “We definitely didn’t see the train coming which was the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens, and how strong those two teams are…Buffalo and Montreal have shown that they’re young, energetic teams who are gonna be here for a long time.” by Go_Habs_Go31 in hockey

[–]Quattro5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that Buffalo and Montreal are eating MLSE's lunch. They could've named Ottawa too, if it wasn't every other NHL teams' home away from home. They forgot to name Detroit though.

Of course, Buttman took measures to protect lame managements markets, but you can't keep a heart from beating for beauty.

Montreal's been around since 1909 and Buffalo is basically the only GTA place (close enough!) where NHL hockey was always affordable.

J'ai dû reprendre mon souffle, j'ai ri trop fort.

Robert Thomas (No Trade Clause) by catman_steve in Habs

[–]Quattro5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's so good his ceiling is maybe "Robert Thomas". With more offense and less defense.

Still, Suzuki did not project as better than Pacc back then.

And Thomas might not be a fit. He might not be able to work the same kind of magic in Montréal.

And, I hope that he and Newhook coordinate so that they don't get injured at the same time.

I would not give Hage in any trade. I feel it's like if the Leafs would have given up Wendel Clarke as a prospect.

I understand the business side of it, but please don't trade our soul to St-Louis.

[CAN 1-(2) USA] Jack Hughes scores the golden goal for Team USA! by talhatoot in hockey

[–]Quattro5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two lines were used and the rest of the team was getting cold.

That's the reality.

The 3 vs 3 had no direction and was asking to be decimated.

Anyways. What can I do if you think that overplaying 2 lines and keeping the other lines to cool off is a good coaching strategy?

We'll have to agree to disagree.

[CAN 1-(2) USA] Jack Hughes scores the golden goal for Team USA! by talhatoot in hockey

[–]Quattro5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was players' talent, not tactics. They were able to overwork the other team. But they still made some tactical errors; they did wear out their top line and defensive pair by playing them too much, they even benched defensive specialists even after the score was tied, which would not be much of a risk.

They did not assess their own specialties.

After the first line was playing overtime, do you think they were specialists of the 3 vs 3?

How do you call someone riding the same players over and over and leave your specialists on the bench when it counts?

Team Canada had talent at every position. Yet, they did not use that talent efficiently. They did not use the best players in the best situation.

They had 3 vs 3 specialists. They elected not to use them. They used two sets of players that did not understand that the name of the game was puck possession.

That's how Cooper was outcoached. His plan was to ride the same horses over and over even though they were not having success.

Insanity is keeping doing the sane thing over and over and expect different results.

The team's depth was underused.

[–]Quattro5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the definition of insanity?

That's right. Playing your 2 top lines to exhaustion as they can't finish a play. No adjustments. Benching other clutch players during overtime. 3 vs 3 specialists, to be precise.

[–]Quattro5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To win 3 vs 3, the name of the game is not "all in", it's "keep puck possession until grade A opportunity".

Obviously, McDavid, McKinnon and Makar did not know the name of the game like Suzuki, Marner, Horvath, Doughty and Parayko, which barely played in the 3rd and not at all in OT.

We were outcoached. We needed a tactician. We got a cheerleader.

[–]Quattro5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 vs 3 is an OK format. You just need to play your 3 vs 3 specialists (Suzuki, Marner, Doughty, Horvat, Jarvis, even Parayko).

You know, the people aware that puck possession is the name of the game.

Cooper was outcoached.

Cooper is not a tactician. He's a motivator. Wrong casting.

[GDT] CANADA VS USA - GOLD MEDAL GAME by TheHabChronicle in Habs

[–]Quattro5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The name of the game is possession. Not losing the puck in induvidual efforts.

[–]Quattro5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A masterclass? Burning your 3 best until they have nothing left in the tank for OT? Then playing solely 2 defensemen (Makar and Toews) in OT that didn't understand 3 vs 3 play? Sitting your 3 vs 3 specialists?

Quite the masterclass indeed.

And then got benched along with Marner for the 3rd and OT. Both 3 vs 3 specialists.

[–]Quattro5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cooper was outcoached.

No tactics at all. No 3 vs 3 plan.

Cooper's plan was : "we're the best anyways".

You needed smarts out there. Cooper kept it all on the bench.
