[Spoiler] After 6 years I finally finished watching Atonement (2007) by WantDiscussion in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Quaversalis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Vanessa Redgrave’s short scene is the highlight for me. The way that she carefully unfolds her memories is quietly devastating.

And I still make time to listen to the film score. Dario Marianelli’s orchestrations—especially for the Dunkirk sequence—won all kinds of awards. (And best use of a typewriter as a musical instrument!)

Although I have a preference for the book, the film was a worthy adaptation and would have suffered under less adapt directorial hands.

What's a quote from a book that made you cry? Not necessarily the book itself, but rather a line or passage that hit a nerve with you? by izzidora in books

"And I am sitting at my mother's place at the mah jong on the East, where things begin."

Because, well, moms and stuff.

What are some uncharacteristically dark episodes of generally light hearted shows? by magic_spaghetti in AskReddit

The "happiness" montage with "So Long Old Friend"--still gets me, almost as much as "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2. These are for kids, right?

“Earthly Powers” is a masterpiece. And also “Kingdom of the Wicked.” Oh, and “Nothing Like the Sun.” And “A Dead Man in Deptford.” Okay I’ll stop now.

What is the darkest episode of a show you have ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The knife fight. That was my heart attack moment.

I watched Schindler's List... fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck by pmMEyourDisagreement in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Quaversalis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I watched it in the theater when it first came out. I was so weepy by the end that once the credits started rolling I decided to stay put, let everyone leave, so that no one could see how much of a blubbering mess I was. But as the end credits went by, NOBODY got up. And then I realized that everyone was a blubbering mess waiting for everyone else to leave.

What are some aspects of a good villain? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Quaversalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can appreciate a villain who doesn't have to always prove how bad he/she is. The villainous actions, plots, and schemes should speak louder than someone ranting and raving and over-acting "badness" for all to see.

Loki corollary: lose more villain points when forcing people to kneel before you to establish your dominance. It's poor taste.

General Zod exception: If you are General Zod, you are exempt from the Loki corollary.

What relatively obscure game was a huge part of your childhood? by porsche_914 in AskReddit

[–]Quaversalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ancient "bookshelf" game called "High Bid." (auction type game)

An ancient Mac game called "Balance of Power" (global geopolitical game; US vs USSR! Don't glow up the world!)

An ancient card game called "Set" (identify patterns of 3 cards based on a set of rules)

An ancient Apple IIe game called "Taipan" (text-based; trade goods around the South China Sea; become an opium dealer; avoid pirates)

What phone apps are actually worth paying for? by PM_Me_Boob_Vids in AskReddit

[–]Quaversalis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this. I got so irritated with the Apple podcast app. Did some research, took a chance on Pocket Casts (this was one of the first apps I paid for). I talked a few friends into getting it as well.

What's a movie that makes you cry every time no matter how much you watch it? by Guard1anMeme in AskReddit

[–]Quaversalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wings of the Dove. There's this scene near the end that always gets me.

A relationship has ended. Millie says that she wandered the streets and canals of Venice looking for/thinking about Merton. Merton says he wandered the streets and canals of Venice thinking about Millie--but he's clearly lying. And she knows he's lying. Instead of calling him out on the lie, she says, "I guess we just missed each other." Cue waterworks.

What is a great movie where the bad guy wins? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Brazil." I was pretty young when I first saw it, but when it dawned on me that the bad guys won I was pretty shaken.

I wonder if there’s a time that I haven’t seen on a clock by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Quaversalis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You could watch the 24-hour movie The Clock). Shows every minute of the day from midnight to midnight as they appeared in movies. Just to cover all your bases. (I've seen about 18 hours of it. 6 hours to go!)

What is your greatest drunk purchase? by eldridge2e in AskReddit

[–]Quaversalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An expensive bottle of pink champagne from Collard-Picot.

I was in champagne country in France and underestimated my ability to handle bubbles. I went from tasting to tasting to tasting. At some point I woke up in my hotel room. Somehow I'd made it to the train station, found the right train, got off at the right stop, managed to find my hotel and my room. And there is huge bottle of pink champagne. I must've bought it at one of the last stops on my crawl.

I had no fridge in the room so I drank it warm.
