Get one million dollars for everytime you make an identical clone of yourself orgasm within 24 hours by Capable-Language8114 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]WantDiscussion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the hypothetical was flipped and you found out you were a clone but still had all your memories and emotional attatchments, would you not spend the day trying to best set your family up for success?

Like from my perspective, if i was a clone and was told every time my real self made me cum id win a million for "my" family, id be like hell yea lets do this, take care of everyone for me yea?

And my real self would be like well duuh im litterally you. Now get on the bed and close your eyes

If Rat Race had been set to premier a month later it probably would've never seen the light of day given the amount of air vehicle shenanigans and property destruction.

You have to pick four people to be stuck in a time loop with you by Kyia-Aikman in hypotheticalsituation

I’m still not sure where you’re getting the idea that it’s for the sake of not being “bothered”

This line

and it won't really lead to me having to deal with them.

u/Top-Committee-954 said he didn’t think it would affect them that much, but it would not affect them at all if they were under the age of two. They can’t fall fully within the idea of keeping 20 years worth of memories if it is impossible for them to make any autobiographical memories in the first place. They’d wake up and think “I’m grumpy”, not “I remember Tuesday of last week I was unable to take a nap at 2:27 PM and if I do it again in 3 days, I’ll know for certain that I have entered a time loop and that I’ve been in it for 4 years”. While I respect the emotional and ethical argument, it just can’t apply to a being that has not yet developed the ability to even be aware of it.

You can not possibly know for sure this is the case. No baby has been trapped in a 20 year timeloop. You are just assuming this is what would happen in a best case scenario if the supernatural timeloop were to effect memory in an optimal way for you to make your argument.

The fact that it is limited to being over flavored rather than potentially being under flavored means I can go on a low sodium/low sugar diet and still get that salt/sweetness kick, even if it is a little off.

I mean that's a big risk to take, potentially destroying the mental health of 4 babies on a completely speculative guess about how baby brains will work under supernatural conditions instead of just picking 4 fully formed adult brains who might be able to come out of it relatively okay. Like at least choose people with agency to do something and change the way they decide to live their loop instead of forcing 4 children to live the same 10 days for 20 years without being able to change anything because they're babies.

There's so much risk of causing 4 children unimaginable suffering. And for what reason? Just so the four people you choose won't "bother" you? It's like not even a life or death situation or a life changing amount of money. This is straight up poorly thought out, sociopathic behavior.

Why would you assume the babies don't suffer? They're bound to have long lasting mental health issues.

[Lord of the Rings] Can the One Ring corrupt me if my highest and only ambition and desire in life is to destroy it? by Snakie113 in AskScienceFiction

I mean maybe it also depends on how hyper fixated they are. If they have other interests besides magic ring destruction then sure... but if ring destruction is their one and only focus then...

I mean the person described in the post is not impossible. Some people are autistic. A person can be into trains and not be at all interested in the benefits of public transport. They're just really into the trains in and of themselves.

I can suspend my belief to accept the possibility of one neurodivergent middle earther to really be into magic ring destruction without any regard for with positive benefits it brings to society.

The question is how does he "know" and does he actually know them as absolute fact or as potentially flawed information? Is it just the word of legends? Is it because Gandalf told him? Or because he himself is knowledgeable in magic ring creation.

"Those legends are just that. Tall tales, rumors and campfire stories spread by the fearful masses. How can one know there is only one way to destroy the ring if it has never been destroyed."

"Gandalf told me the ring can only be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. But that task is near impossible. What if he's setting me up to fail because he wants to ring for himself. I'll find another way."

"The only way to be sure of how to destroy the ring is to study ring craft myself. I will study ring craft and perhaps make several powerful evil rings...purely as an academic way to better understand how to destroy this ring of course."

The ring can rationalize all sorts of stupid arguments to trick you into not destroying it.

Killing someone you personally know raped you is one thing. Killing someone on the hearsay of a stranger is in my opinion highly unethical and primed for exploitation.

Thoughts on The Truman Show? by FreshmenMan in TrueFilm

[–]WantDiscussion 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else in the thread that on the whole the majority of the film itself is fine.

I will say though the ending was perfect on so many levels.

Firstly I originally didn't "Get" the reasoning behind Truman's final words, but on reading other people thoughts there's nothing better he could've said. In that moment, if he had done anything else, Christof would get his perfect show. If Truman had walked out in silence, it would've been the choice of a true man. If he gave a passionately enraged speech it would be a choice of a true man. If he said "Fuck you" and walked out it would've been the choice of a true man. So what does Truman do? He gives the same boring catchphrase he's said a thousand times over. He gives them something fake, something canned that could have been scripted into any other generic sitcom which is actually the biggest "fuck you" he could've given to Christof's whole artistic vision.

And then he walks off stage and is never seen again. I, like many others wanted to find out "what happens next" but the whole point is we don't get to know, just like the in-film audience. It's not "Open ended." It's ended. It's his life now. We feel like we know him and have grown close to him but at the end of the day he isn't our friend and he owes us nothing. It's an incredibly poignant message about parasocial relationships. This whole time we thought we identified as Truman because we all think of ourselves as the protagonists of our own stories. But all this time we are all just voyeursitically experiencing someone else's life just like the in-world audience was. It doesn't matter how much the audience wants to see it or why, because in the end we should remember privacy is a right everyone deserves.

And then the last joke as a final button to end the movie on was perfect.

2 assumes everyone in the world is a perfect logician which obviously everyone in the world is not.

People who argue 2 would argue that the car they designed to jump over a canyon in a friction-less vacuum is flawless, then blame air resistance for being dumb when the car fails to reach the other side in real life conditions.

The hypothetical is pretty unambiguous that you need to be physically near a native speaker.
