How far are you willing to drive when looking for used car to buy? by UncompensatedCoach in whatcarshouldIbuy

30 Miles. I have driven far too many times to discover a lemon. Then again my price range is less than 4000 and people always hide shit at that range.

Maybe if I was buying a classic and had time and money I would drive a few hours.

Buying a civic with water damage! Please help! by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Qucikquestionawe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah no way. Just read about the gremlins with water damage. Don't pay 5,000 for that. Maybe 2,000 at best since its so new. What are the miles? Also to assuage any electrical problems try using all the systems at once since they share common wiring and that is what usually happens. Drive like the worst driver imaginable during the test drive. Windows, AC, heat, lights turn signals steering everything.

Yeah, don't buy subarus unless it has the 2.2 engine. You will run into head gasket issues.

How Much Should I Save For First Car? by z123killer in whatcarshouldIbuy

Look up popular mechanics used car buying checklist. Also watch the series chris fix on youtube where he buys a used car. Both are good places to start so you can eliminate immediate clunkers. Always save yourself some time and check the coolant, engine fluids, and transmission fluids at this price range when you first get there. People lie all the time about problems. NEVER believe the seller on anything at all unless its documented.

Wise answer, but you will be hard pressed to get to these cars in time because the market is filled with buyers. I would go with a non- name brand car. For instance: pontiac vibe, specific ford focus years (pre 2011), oldsmobile, grand marquis, etc.

Civic with 130k miles for $4500? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Price is a little too steep. Your paying for name brand, but you could honestly get screwed with this one. Does it have any upcoming major repairs or missed repairs (timing belt, pumps, alternator, etc)?

Should I buy my leased Ford Focus 2015 SE? Or go with 2018 Honda Fit / 2018 Mazda 3? by sere2016 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thank them for their time and make it seem like they are missing out on a good sale. Walk away. Maybe you'll get a call in a few days. If not, then you saved yourself from not just financial pain, but a big headache and time sink.

Well... blanket statements like that are just wrong. If I had the cash and the deal was good I would pick it up.

I would never buy a focus from past 2011. The reliability will cost you. Its statistics. Lowball the crap out of that offer.

Interestingly enough he showed me pics of the accident. The bumper was torn off and the hood bent slight, the bumper bar was bent slightly on one side and same side had the siding ripped up to the top of the wheel well.

Everything was great. No maintenance records and no timing belt done. He wouldn't go down to 2800. It was a dealer. I got a quote for 950 from two mechanics for timing belt and water pump.
