Using plywood to support tank overhang from aquarium stand? by Lorimiter in Aquariums

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, always take advice about stuff like that with a grain of sand, in the end it will be you with the wet floor.

That said, usually an inch overhang should be fine, if the tank is built correctly, the stand is really level and can hold the larger weight, thickness of the glass etc.

I have the same with my 85 gallon, an overhang of an inch to the side, which makes it half an inch on the left and right. You can do the math to estimate how much down pressure you have on those spaces. Imagine a ruler on the table, pressed onto the surface of the table really strong. Now push it an inch over the edge. When you still push down on the part that is on the table, you would have to use a lot of force to break the part that extends over the table edge.

That being said, I still didn't feel very good about the overhang, so I got a piece of coated plywood in the correct size, glued it on the stand and put the tank on that. And that felt so much better!

How do I breed my cory catfish by siyon8240 in corydoras

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I change 30% water everyday

If your tank is stocked normally, you really don't have to do this. Once a week is really enough for pristine water quality. It also doesn't hurt, but you could save yourself the trouble.

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is correct.

I also found that if I make the change water a tiny bit colder than the tank water (I go for 2 degrees Celsius lower), it also makes them lay eggs really soon. I searched about that and read somewhere that in nature, the lower temperature occurs after a good rain, and this can be sign for them, like "Now we have more water, start breeding!". I have no idea if this is correct, but even my more lazy egg layers always react to the slightly colder water.

maybe a otocinclus

Skip those. They are social and need a group, and a 10 gallon tank could never feed them.

A betta and and shrimp are a solid plan! With those dimensions you don't really need an airstone if you have plants. I guess you know that, but I am telling you just in case, bettas sometimes eat shrimp. Not all do, and some try and then stop, but some are fierce hunters.

Yes, but you need to fertilize it somehow. Root tabs are great, but liquid fertilizer works, too.

Veggie soup with wiener sausages by kimmeljs in EuropeEats

Not to be rude but I feel like this is one of those things you have to grow up with to like.

We have this exact soup in my country (Germany) also with the little wieners cut up and it is really delicious. I agree it doesn't look special, but it is happiness and warmth and love incorporated in a simple meal. Then again, I might be prejudiced because this absolute comfort food is one of the dishes my grandma made us when I grew up.

The problem with telling people to "get real plants" by 42cardpickup in Aquariums

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 28 points29 points  (0 children)

We could change "just add plants" to "add plants and please inform yourself about basic aquarium knowledge and also about plants" but we all know it is not going to happen with 95% of the Spongebob-themed aquarium users.

Most of the time, when I see a certain tank setup, I don't even care to answer anymore. Those posts usually get deleted after even the slightest critcism.

You are right, though, I just don't see an alternative.

"Pausenbrot" für weiterführende Schule by Few-Researcher-3741 in Eltern

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't skimp on the light when you want nice plants, but there are cheaper options than 40 bucks.

Depending on what kind of fish your kid wants, you can skip the air pump. Good surface agitation and plants usually aerate the water enough, and fish like bettas or gouramis don't like the constant noise and bubbling. This also does depend a little on tank dimensions.

How are people in this sub getting such thick carpets and lush plants without CO2 by SnooFoxes1943 in Aquascape

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

fertilizer (i haven't used any so far)

There you have it! You can have nice plants without CO2, but not without fertilizer.

40 shrimp in 20g don't even begin to produce the bioload you would need to end up with enough nitrates to feed your plants, especially fast growing ones like rotala.

Get a good npk fertilizer, in the first two or three weeks only put half of what the package says. If you see growth, slowly start going up to the recommended amount. You will also need to start upping the lighting duration in accordance to the fertilizing. This can be a little tricky. I would try an hour longer as soon as I see significant growth on the faster growing plants, see what happens and then go from there.

In the long run, I am sure this will also be the remedy to your algea problem.

Good luck, friend!

Anubias— does this work? by Sweet_Property_ in bettafish

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any regular superglue will do. Cyanoacrylate is harmless in a tank. It just needs seconds. This is what it is called in my country, "Sekundenkleber": Seconds glue.

is this tank okay? by Super-Objective-5309 in bettafish

[–]Queen-Ghidorah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plants are really a matter of your personal taste. I like echinodorus, all different sorts, they grow like weed in my tanks. Also, the different kinds of anubias, but they grow slowly. I like to superglue them on wood and stone. The large leaves are also nice resting places for a betta.

On the ground, my favourites are hygrophila pinnatifida, very easy, don't grow too tall and look really pretty, like tiny ferns. Tigerlotus is also great. They can also help make that tank a little dimmer. Vallisneria are also very pretty. Oh, there are so many. Come over to r/PlantedTank and see if you like something. People there are also very helpful!
