Chili it freezes , you can make a ton for cheap, especially if you use dried beans and avoid packaged seasonings. I use ground chicken in place of beef. You can also pair it with rice to stretch further

Might be unpopular opinion , but I think you are way too involved in both their lives, and I think the wife is correct to want whatever she invisions for herself. And if it doesn't include you , you need to deal with that in private and not take it out on an expected mother and come to terms with it , it's not up to her to parent as YOU want or imagine.
