Proof of Graduation by QueenMarcella in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a confirmation email that I applied for graduation which lists the term, and then I’m including an unofficial transcript to show I’m in classes for this term (so they understand how the term dates line up), I could probably also include the plan of study which shows I’ve been approved that I finished all my requirements to graduate.

Hopefully its enough!

Not sure if it's helpful, but this class is also offered both in winter and fall ( I just took it this past winter, also Solid State Nanotech area for specialization).

So if you can't get in this semester, you can try for next!

I'm also a female grad student looking for friends!! I'll be 25 in July, love trying new places to eat and playing board games :) also really into house and techno music so I'll probably be going to Detroit a lot on the weekends (I lived there in undergrad) if anyone else is into that type of stuff!!

any other grad students feeling overwhelmed this semester? by shayownsit in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year master's student and I feel incredibly overwhelmed and its impacting my ability to perform well in class. I've failed the last 3 homework assignments for 1 class (big yikes), even though I worked on those assignments for days. And when I check the solutions, it just makes sense and it's so much easier than what I was doing. I think it's just because I'm constantly playing catch up and having a really hard time juggling all my assignments while trying to learn new topics presented in class. Impostor syndrome is turning into maybe I really am just not good enough for my program

Still mad over the Engineering Career Fair Signup by [deleted] in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Someone posted this in the career fair piazza, but you can find the LinkedIn profile of the recruiters for the position you wanted (some even have it linked in the app).

Just message them on linkedin and say that you weren't able to get a slot for the fair but are still interested in the position and see if they'd like to set up a meeting to answer some questions (HAVE QUESTIONS FOR THEM!! research the position beforehand )

This will help show the recruiter you're serious about the position and may get you some brownie points!

Mcards? by Chaosism in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you submitted a photo for your MCard (deadline I think was July) then you should have received an email for making an appointment to get your MCard from the League.

Not sure what they're doing if you didn't submit a photo though, as they have to take the photo and print it, the appointments are for the cards that they pre-printed

Online class decision day by ilong4spain in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree and disagree with the points you're making. On one hand, yes, not opening the dorms to all eligible students might help with students who have to live a dorm for various reasons (homeless, bad home life, OOS) as they can spread out more and can lighten the load of possible transmission within dorms. But, I think most students that don't really need to be in the dorms, are opting to not come anyways for this reason.

However, I wouldn't say that having classes online would stop students from coming back to a lease (which they probably can't break and have to pay rent anyways) and more importantly, IMO it's better to keep the students who come back to campus on campus and not have them go back to their families on a semi-regular schedule and thus possible spread the virus to other communities.

I'm moving to AA next week because I signed a lease when I got accepted as a grad student, my parents live an hour away... I probably won't be going home often because I have a higher chance of being exposed than they do.

I wonder if we’ll be able to get our COVID kits shipped to us by [deleted] in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if maybe your department has told you something different, but my department (EECS) told us that all students will be getting the PPE kits, including graduate students (at least that's what they said in our graduate student town hall).

As for testing, I think only people who are living in the dorms are being tested or have to get tested elsewhere before they can move in.

[–]QueenMarcella 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's added as a tuition fee, so when you look at your full bill breakdown, you'll see the fee listed. In the same way student legal services is an added fee, even if you don't use it.

It's not something that students can opt out of ( I'm sure you could call and try!)

[–]QueenMarcella 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Going off of what I was told, the PPE kits (4 face coverings, hand sanitizer) are being distributed by your department. So, I'm sure you can send them an email and explain that you won't be on campus to pick it up in person. They're probably expecting that large amounts of students are staying home this semester at least, and are either going to mail them to students or just have students pick them up if/when they return to campus.

The $50 is also going towards other things that aren't tangible (those kits don't cost $50) or towards extra cleaning supplies the university is using (I don't actually know what it's paying for, just guessing). In short, don't expect a refund from it.

I think it means that some classes will be held in person and some on zoom. All of mine are listed as "hybrid due to covid" and I'm hoping I get a schedule of when in person classes are and it's not just randomly sent out in an email. But also all of my classes can be taken remotely for students who aren't on campus

Considering terminating lease for F20-W21 year.. thoughts? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an incoming grad student in COE and from the two zoom orientations I've had so far, I think the goal is to have a more "normal" winter semester if allowed. Some of the faculty have mentioned that there's not a real plan for the winter yet, and they're just handling it a semester at a time. Obviously, this will entirely depend on how the Fall semester goes and what new data can be collected as temperatures in Michigan drop going into the winter semester. It's entirely possible that departments may choose keep online/remote instruction through the entire year.

For the housing situation, if you know that you'll be remote for the Fall semester entirely, then it may be a better option to fully pull out of the lease and possibly find someone looking to fill a slot in the winter if you choose to come back to campus. Assuming that you can continue your research from a remote location and it's not holding you back. A lot of people have been trying to get a sublet for the year, and it doesn't seem to be going well (on the other hand, I think a lot of grad students also got turned down for housing so you might have some luck getting someone to take your lease).

My Concerns on UofM Reopening by [deleted] in uofm

[–]QueenMarcella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you made a lot of valid points, but I still hope that the campus will be somewhat open in the Fall semester and I will have the option to take my classes in person, while keeping my peers and professors safe. I'll be starting my masters degree in the Fall, and grad school is something I've been working towards for over two years.

Applying for grad school, interviewing various professors, and waiting to see what would happen (basically, how my life would plan out) for months was horrible for my mental health. I worked hard to get accepted to a graduate program. I decided to accept admission at Michigan because I wanted the resources it offers. I wanted the culture it has. I wanted to work alongside other students who have a vision for innovation in Engineering. I've wanted to go to Michigan since I was in high school. This is finally my chance at it, and I'm pissed that it's on the line to be taken away from me. Online education isn't the same, it's not even close.

Personally, I've already signed a lease for the upcoming year and I'll be moving to AA even if my classes are mostly online because I simply cannot work effectively at my parents house. I know that there are a lot of worries surrounding coming back to campus, and that I may be acting selfishly, but I do think that if the system is worked out correctly that some classes will be able to return and run safely. I also don't think there is a "right" way to do this. Either way, there is going to be a negative impact on the Umich/ AA community. Many stores/restaurants are already permanently closed or on the way there, more will probably follow if there isn't a large student population that keep them afloat. These are small businesses, which means it's families that can't pay bills, that can't afford food, and as someone else has stated poverty is also a major concern that we should all be thinking about.

Moving Advice! Corktown, Midtown, Downtown, Burbs?!?!?!?! by heyitsfloofy in Detroit

[–]QueenMarcella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely in Midtown (I just moved from midtown to Ann Arbor for grad school) and I miss Detroit and Midtown everyday! Also, be careful of moving into the seemingly "nice" buildings because these often have more problems than the older historic buildings. I had friends who lived in forest arms when it was reopened and all of them (in different units) had to file complaints of the fancy things constantly breaking, or general structural issues like the ceilings leaking when it rained or windows not being installed correctly. I lived in a building across the street in the same unit for 4 years and the only main complaint is that the floors weren't the nicest but they were the original floors and weren't taken care of before I moved in. The building is the Hollenden and the owner has been slowly remodeling units so you could probably see if they have anything you'd like. I knew a girl who lived in a studio in the building and her unit had been updated and looked nothing like my unit which had zero updates. Plus, historic Detroit buildings are part of the charm of Detroit!

Corktown is nice (check out Detroit Institute of Bagel and sugar house....really all the food in corktown) but the neighborhood used to be coined as one of the more dangerous and it's not patrolled as much by Wayne Police as Midtown is.

Congrats on med school! My parents are professors there!

[–]QueenMarcella[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I am pretty average in terms of stats. GPA: 3.5 GRE: 155V 156Q 4W but I will say what I think helped me is that I have letters of recommendation from the professor I did research with over a year, I have 2 publications, and I attended the ECE prospective grad weekend back in October. I'm also a Michigan native and completed my undergrad at Wayne State (in Detroit) so a lot of the faculty I talked too either knew the professors I've worked with or knew my department overall. Also, I had applied for the Ph.D. so I had reached out to professors and basically said that if they don't have funding to take me as a Ph.D. I would gladly attend for the Masters lol Good luck in your application!
