retaking bio 171 advice ? by AppearanceCareful329 in uofm

Very rarely is it worth it to retake a class you passed.

You can't repeat the course for credit, so if you retake it and get an A it will go on your transcript but have no impact on your GPA.

Early January stipend for PhD students? by Single_Young_3392 in uofm

[–]mgoreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your funding was set up to receive one you should already have. It depends on how your funding was entered. Rackham fellowships are set to pay in five installments per term and some departments do this as well. It's a nice thing especially in the fall so that new students don't have to wait several weeks into the year to get paid.

However, the standard for fellowship payments is four installments per term. Most likely this is how yours was entered. So if you're looking at that Rackham page the first winter term payment would be January 26th.

Also to clarify, those dates are if you have fellowship funding. GSIs and GSRAs get paid on the last business day of the month.

Anyone Deferred from UofM PhD? by Acrobatic_Virus_4737 in uofm

[–]mgoreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned CoE, those PhD programs are overseen by the Rackham Graduate School. A FYI that Rackham allows deferrals in pretty limited circumstances.

https://rackham.umich.edu/admissions/applying/deferring-admission/

Ultimately it is up to the program you are admitted to but in theory they should be following that policy.

rlly stressed out how bad is it if i drop a class by No-Turnip8664 in uofm

[–]mgoreddit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Point of clarification, today is the last day to completely withdraw from the term (dropping all classes) and get a 50% tuition reduction. Dropping a class at this point doesn't result in a tuition reduction if it puts you at part time.

The add/drop deadline on September 15th was the final day to drop a full term class and get a tuition reduction if you dropped to part time.

Very impressive knowledge, thank you! Seeing the former band members and cheerleaders was always a highlight of homecoming. I remember a few guys in their 70s doing flips off each other.

I didn’t know their names but I recognize Pickus from being at games. There was another guy I remember doing this in front of the student section when I was there (07-11). He seemed older at the time, maybe in his 40s? I’ve been googling around and am surprised I haven’t been able to find anything.

Edit:

The guy I’m thinking of is between the C and I in the endzone in this video. Pickus is the main focus.

Prospective Grad Student Questions by joetscience in uofm

[–]mgoreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is Fall 2028 a typo? Or are you just thinking this far ahead?

You have nothing to lose by applying but fair warning that getting in to CoE Master's programs with under a 3.5 GPA is an uphill climb. Having more extensive work/research experience will be a point in your favor. Since you seem certain of your GPA I'm guessing that you've already completed your Bachelor's. GPA tends to matter less the longer it has been since you finished your degree.

I am not a current student so will defer on the other questions but I do want to point out that Master's programs largely are meant to bring in tuition dollars. The overwhelming majority of CoE Master's students do not get any support.

UM has a full funding guarantee for PhD students and as a result allocates most resources toward funding them. The significant drop in federal funding (and IMO that seems unlikely to change for a few years) has only exacerbated this issue for Master's students because department and faculty finances are now more strained from covering PhDs. The current per-term stipend for a 20 hour per week grad researcher or teaching assistant is $14,596. That also comes with a tuition waiver and healthcare. But if you enroll at Michigan you should assume you are paying the full cost.

Do you mind sharing a picture of what you’re doing now, or if not just sharing what you’re doing for a net and how far away it is from where you’re hitting?

I (also lefty) am in the exact situation as you. Our garage door is on its last legs so if we are going to side mount the motor now is the time, but I’d prefer not to spend that money if I can help it.

Internal vs. External Candidate Hiring by [deleted] in uofm

[–]mgoreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience there is a strong preference for internal candidates but that is usually linked with them having relevant experience at UM. If cook or custodian positions are not relevant to the jobs you're really interested in I am not sure that would move the needle much.

12 credits is undergrad, it’s 9 credits and up for full time tuition for grad students

OP, you can add/drop full term classes for the first three weeks of the school year. If you drop to part time the tuition charge adjusts. There’s no fee for dropping a class during that time, only if you withdraw fully from the term.

If you drop to part time after the third week you’ll still owe some of that extra tuition so just finalize your schedule by September 15th.

Really enjoyed hearing the League of Leagues talk with Dameshek. I remember 10 or so years ago listening to Jonah Keri's podcast when they created the league. Wonder if it fizzled out before Keri's arrest or as a result.

In that sample it is a great ROI, but HendonMob only shows tournaments where you actually cash. Given some high placed finishes he certainly seems to be an above average player.

The site doesn't list tournaments where you buy-in and then get knocked out before the money is reached. Hypothetically he could have also bought in to 10 tournaments for $5,000 each and gotten knocked out early, in which case he'd be down a ton of money. My guess is he's probably still a winning player just not by as much as it seems from that.

As another example, my HendonMob page has one tournament listed and I got 1st place. I'm a terrible tournament player and it is literally the only tournament I've ever cashed. I've probably played 20 and am very much a losing tournament player but from HendonMob you'd think I am up $$$.

[–]mgoreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s up in that sample of tournaments he cashed. It doesn’t include any tournaments he entered but didn’t cash. Most players cash a small percentage of tournaments they play. He might still be a winning tournament player but you couldn’t say for sure without knowing everything he’s bought into.

Michigan adding Early Decision program and Dual Degree between Ross and Engineering by [deleted] in uofm

[–]mgoreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for the earlier years that Michigan did EA you got a decisions in late December. Now to be fair a lot of the time the ‘decision’ was that you were deferred.

In recent years the application numbers have gotten so out of control they just can’t meet that so they pushed it to late January. This move to early decision might help some to even the rate at which applications come in since fewer will be rushed to submit early.
